Openreach Name 28 New UK Areas for Copper to FTTP Switch – Tranche 14

Openreach (BT) has released the next batch of 28 UK exchanges under Tranche 14 of their “FTTP Priority Exchange Stop Sell” project, which reflects locations where over 75% of premises are able to get full fibre broadband and can thus stop selling copper based phone and broadband products (i.e. FTTP becomes the only product available).

The Top 5 Fastest and Slowest Parts of the UK for Broadband

A new analysis of 265,572 consumer broadband ISP speed tests claims to have revealed the top fastest and slowest five areas, as well as five cities, across the United Kingdom. For example, the village of Halkirk in the Highlands of Scotland was named as the slowest area (2.8Mbps), while Canterbury came out as the slowest city (34.3Mbps).

Broadband ISP File Sanctuary Cuts UK FTTP and SOGEA Prices

Internet provider File Sanctuary has just informed us that they’re lowering prices for both new and existing customers on their Openreach based Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) and SOGEA (FTTC) broadband packages. The ISP is also dropping the price with immediate effect for those who are mid-contract – the opposite of what big ISPs do.

Ofcom Summer 2023 Study – Full Fibre Broadband Covers 52% of UK

Ofcom’s summer 2023 study of UK fixed broadband and mobile coverage has reported that “full fibre” (FTTP) now reaches 52% of the UK (up from 48% in Jan 2023), while 75% are within reach of a gigabit-capable network (up from 73%) and 76-85% of premises can get an outdoor 5G signal from at least one operator (up from 73-82%).

Openreach Stops Selling New UK Analogue Copper Phone Lines

Openreach (BT) has this morning confirmed that they’ve formally introduced their long-planned UK wide “stop sell” on sales of new Wholesale Line Rental (WLR) and related broadband ISP products, which is part of their aim to completely withdraw the old copper-based Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN) by December 2025.

BDUK Analysis Shows Benefits of UK Phase 3 Superfast Broadband Project

The Government has posted an updated State Aid evaluation of the previous ‘Superfast Broadband Programme’ (UK National Broadband Scheme), which specifically examines the final Phase 3 of the project to extend “superfast” (30Mbps+) coverage – run between 2016 and 2022. What is “Fibre” Broadband? UK ISPs Respond to Ofcom’s Call for Clarity

A few months ago Ofcom launched a new consultation that proposed to only allow broadband ISPs to use the terms “fibre” and “full-fibre” on their sites and in contracts “if their network uses fibre-optic cables all the way from the exchange to the home” (FTTP). But feedback suggests that the biggest providers are not supportive.
