Hull-based UK broadband ISP KCOM has, thus far, been fairly quiet on the operator’s plans to withdraw their older copper-based broadband (ADSL and VDSL) and phone (PSTN) products. But a recent update, which was given to their wholesale customers, appears to have included a solid indication of the likely timeline.

UK ISP Sky Broadband will today introduce a few new discounts on the monthly price of their fastest Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) based Ultrafast and Gigafast broadband packages on Openreach’s national network, which shaves a few extra pounds off the previous pricing.

UK ISP BT has updated their existing range of discounts, not least by boosting the value on some of their included reward vouchers (preloaded MasterCards) and also shaving an extra pound or two off the existing offer prices for their Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) packages. Some FTTP plans also include a 1-month free speed boost.

Telecoms giant BT has posted a new update on their current network plans and performance, which among other things reveals that data and internet traffic over their fixed network (broadband and Ethernet) recently hit a new peak of 28Tbps (Terabits per second) during their busiest hour (up from 25Tbps at the end of 2021).

The Chief Technology Officer for UK telecoms giant BT (EE), Howard Watson, has revealed that the operator is seeking more time from the Government for it to remove Huawei’s kit from the sensitive core of their national broadband and mobile network (this is due to be replaced by similar kit from Ericsson).

New customers of UK ISP and mobile operator EE, specifically those taking out one of their fibre-based home broadband packages (FTTC, G.fast or FTTP), can now benefit from an additional discount that offers the first three months of service at half-price (sale ends 7th July 2022).

The Government’s £2.53bn Superfast Broadband Programme (SFBB) has so far helped to extend 24-30Mbps+ capable UK ISP networks to 5,440,086 extra premises since 2012 and the latest take-up data to March 2022 shows strong demand, with adoption in most of the original build areas now exceeding 80%.

Openreach (BT) has hinted that, for the first time, new installations of their hybrid Fibre-to-the-Cabinet (FTTC / VDSL2) broadband ISP lines may soon start to shrink, which would partly reflect the rising coverage of gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) technology.

Imagine if your FTTC (VDSL2) broadband line was cancelled and couldn’t be re-provisioned by your ISP because “full fibre” FTTP was now the only option available. Fine. But now imagine if you tried to order FTTP and found that UK ISPs were quoting you up to £12k for installation. This could become more common.

Ofcom’s latest Spring 2022 report into fixed broadband and mobile coverage has revealed that “full fibre” (FTTP) now reaches 33% of the UK (up from 28% in Sept 2021), while 19.3 million homes (66%) are within reach of a gigabit-capable network (up from 47%). Geographic 5G coverage has also improved.

The latest research from Point Topic has found that world fixed broadband lines grew by 1.53% (19.247 million) in Q4 2021 to end the year on a total of 1.274 billion connections, while the quarterly growth rate of “full fibre” (FTTP/B) networks in the UK remained strong at 12.5% (albeit down from 14.8% in Q2 2021).

Vodafone UK has today published their latest results (financial Q4 FY22), which reveals that their fixed broadband base has finally passed the million mark to total 1,050,000 (up by +59k in the quarter vs +29k in Q3 FY22). But it’s unclear whether they’ve managed to achieve national availability across CityFibre’s FTTP network, yet.

The BT Group has published their Q4 2021/22 results to March 2022, which saw the coverage of Openreach’s gigabit Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP network grow by a record 752,000 premises in the quarter (up from +662K last quarter) to total 7.2 million. The operator also signed an FTTP co-provisioning deal with Sky Broadband.

New research from the University of Cambridge – supported by BT and Huawei – has attempted to identify the theoretical limits of Openreach’s standard UK copper broadband lines (unshielded twisted copper pairs), while harnessing up to 12GHz of spectrum. The result is faster speeds are possible, but full fibre is still the future.

Good news. UK ISP Sky Broadband and sibling NOW Broadband have today become the latest internet providers to launch a cheaper “social tariff” for home broadband and phone connectivity, which is being offered to consumers who are claiming Universal Credit or Pension Credit.

Mobile operator and UK ISP Vodafone has today enhanced their existing “Together” bundle of fixed line broadband (FTTC or FTTP) and mobile plans (4G or 5G) with the addition of family rewards, as well as an additional SIM discount and Norton 360 Premium for online sector and parental controls.

Energy provider and UK ISP Shell Energy has enhanced the existing discount on some of their full fibre (FTTP) broadband packages (specifically the 500Mbps and 900Mbps plans) by adding a £50 bill credit for new customers. The new offer is expected to run until 3rd July 2022.
