Alternative network ISP Ecom, which is deploying a new 1Gbps Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network in rural Buckinghamshire (England), has hit a snag after the developer of a new build homes site in Whitchurch appeared to shun their offer of a free “full fibre” build. Instead future owners may suffer slow ADSL.

The Gloucestershire and Herefordshire UK councils appear to be on the verge of agreeing a new £14m Broadband Strategy for their joint Fastershire project, which will run until the end of 2022 and aims to extend the reach of “superfast broadband” (30Mbps+) ISP networks into some of the most poorly served parts of both counties.

A few months ago a new ISP called Fidelity Broadband unveiled their plan to deploy a 1Gbps Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) network to cover over 1 million UK premises “on-demand” (here). Now the same provider has revealed that they also intend to build a Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH) network for homes and businesses.

New UK ISP Swish Fibre, which only recently entered the market (here), has been acquired by Fern Trading Ltd as part of a “long-term funding deal” that they say will enable them to unlock £250m of investment and begin their roll-out of a 10Gbps Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network to cover 250,000 premises (starting outside London).

A new UK ISP called Connect Fibre (Fibre Assets Ltd.) has today announced its presence to the industry and that comes alongside their goal of becoming Cambridgeshire’s “first open access full fibre broadband” operator, although strictly speaking Openreach (BT) and Cityfibre may have already taken that crown.

Full fibre network builder Cityfibre, which is currently in the process of investing £20m to build a new Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH) network that will reach around 60,000 premises in Cambridge via UK ISP partner Vodafone (here), appears to have put their network live with the first customers getting a connection.

Yesterday saw the Conservative party return to power after securing a large majority in the 2019 UK General Election. In response broadband ISPs have politely welcomed the “new” government but have called upon PM Boris Johnson to get on with the job of implementing his commitment to gigabit connectivity for all by 2025.

Fibre optic operator Cityfibre, which is currently in the process of investing £2.5bn in order to deploy a new 1Gbps Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP network to cover 5 million premises across 60 UK cities and towns by the end of 2025, has today signed the Armed Forces Covenant (AFC).

Last month UK ISP TalkTalk promised that they would launch a new range of ultrafast broadband packages “before the end of the calendar year“, which for the first time would be based off Openreach’s (BT) new gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network. The first customer trials are now quietly going live.

The Chichester District Council (CDC) in West Sussex (England) has confirmed their intention to enter into a new agreement with Cityfibre, which will see the operator extend their roll-out of a new “full fibre” Ethernet and broadband network in the cathedral city in order to help it cover a further 50 public sector sites.

Rural full fibre broadband ISP Gigaclear has confirmed to ISPreview.co.uk that they are now in the final stages of piecing together the next phase of a revised commercial rollout plan for Devon and Somerset (England). Assuming all goes to plan then this could be finalised before the end of Q1 2020.

Fixed wireless broadband ISP Voneus, which recently secured £30m to help their wireless and fibre network target 900,000 UK premises (here), has today announced that they intend to cover the “whole” of the city of Wells in Somerset. The news comes only days after full fibre provider TrueSpeed said they’d cover the same city (here).

London focused UK full fibre broadband ISP Community Fibre has hired Peter Rampling to be its new Chief Commercial Officer (CCO) and Dale Kirkwood as their Chief Information Officer (CIO). Both appointments are necessary in order to support the provider’s future network expansion and growth.

A new study from consumer magazine Which? has claimed that people living in 36% of UK constituency areas (236 of the 650 total) do not have access to “decent 4G [mobile] or broadband” services. The study was based on old data from Ofcom and found that areas in rural Scotland and Wales bore the brunt of the problem.

Well this is an odd but interesting one. A team of VTT scientists from Finland have successfully transmitted light over a new type of wood-based optic fibre cable, which has a core that is made from cellulose and this has the added advantage of being biodegradable.
