Broadband internet connectivity across part of the County Durham (England) village of Shotton Colliery was left disconnected for five days earlier this week after Openreach’s local network was targeted by copper cable thieves. The activity also caused damage to some local fibre optic cables.

ISPreview has spotted that the Welsh Government (WG) have today issued a formal tender notice for their £70m (state aid) “Extending High Speed Broadband” (EHSB) project for Wales. In its current form, this aims to help extend faster broadband to around 29,000 premises in poorly served areas (i.e. locations that can’t yet access 30Mbps+ speeds).

Alternative rural broadband ISP Airband, which has deployed their gigabit-speed capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) and Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) networks to cover parts of Wales and South West England, has today announced that the company’s existing Managing Director, Kashif Rahman, has been promoted to Chief Executive Officer (CEO) – effective immediately.

The Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) has banned a website promotion for London-focused broadband ISP CommunityFibre, which occurred after it was found to have misleadingly claimed to be both the “#1 rated internet provider on Trustpilot – with the most 5 star reviews” and “#1 Best ‘Internet Provider’“.

Rural-focused broadband ISP and alternative network builder Wessex Internet, which is deploying a mix of full fibre (FTTP) and fixed wireless networks across Southern England, has today published their annual accounts to the end of 2024 and highlighted both their “best-in-class” take-up of over 30% and a 20.5% rise in revenues to £5.76m (2023: £4.78m).

The UK government has begun consulting on new proposals aimed at speeding up the process of home buying and selling, while also improving the material information that Estate Agents are required to provide for every transaction. The availability of broadband, as well as mobile signal and coverage, are some of the data points proposed for inclusion in future guidance.

Alternative network ISP Quickline, which is rolling out a new gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) and wireless (FWA) broadband network across rural parts of Yorkshire and Lincolnshire in England (3-Year Rollout Plan), has published their accounts to the end of 2024 and revealed revenues grew to £3.9m (2023: £3m). But they had an operating loss of £33.1m (2023: £28.8m).

Alternative network operator and UK ISP Briant Broadband has informed ISPreview that customers covered by their own Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network around the seaside town of Worthing (West Sussex, England), which now reaches 10,500 properties passed (and serviceable), can access symmetric speeds of up to 5,000Mbps (5Gbps).

The Oak Tree Housing Association, which provides social housing across parts of Inverclyde in Scotland and owns 1,960 homes, has reached a new access agreement (wayleave) with Openreach (BT). The deal will enable the operator to extend their Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP network across numerous buildings in the town of Greenock.

A number of Openreach’s rivals are understood to have raised fresh competition concerns with Ofcom after the operator introduced a new discount on upgrades (here). The offer was designed to help encourage ISPs to shift customers off older copper-based broadband services and on to newer full fibre (FTTP) lines, but not everyone is happy.

The independent wholesale broadband and leased-lines aggregator, VeloxServ, has today announced that they’ve added Gigaclear’s rural full fibre broadband network to their platform as part of a new supplier partnership. The move gives partners (ISPs etc.) access to yet another alternative network, the fourth new supplier partner they’ve onboarded in 2025.

Telecom giant Vodafone and strategic supplier Nokia have today revealed that they conducted their first real-world trial of “lag-busting” L4S (Low Latency, Low Loss, and Scalable Throughput) technology on a “live home broadband fibre [FTTP] connection“. The trial was able to significant reduce the delay (latency) time during gaming and videoconferencing by 94%.

A number of homes, businesses and several network operators, including Netomnia (Youfibre, Brsk) and Openreach (BT), were impacted yesterday outside the City of Durham after vandals gained access to a chamber and cut vital fibre optic cables; disrupting local broadband connectivity for a protracted period.

Glasgow-based full fibre broadband ISP Brillband, which was acquired by AllPoints Fibre Networks (APFN) back in October 2024 (here) and sells packages to homes over the same wholesale platform, has today announced that “every new Brillband customer” will receive their next-generation Wi-Fi 7 router as standard. No price hikes needed.

The UK’s largest alternative full fibre (FTTP) broadband ISP network, CityFibre, has today published their latest results and revealed that they now cover 4.6 million premises (4.3m RFS) and have seen record growth in customer connections, with 108,000 customers connected in Q3 2025 (up from 58k in Q2) to total 730,000.
