Carlisle-based alternative network operator and ISP Grain (Grain Connect), which recently secured a major £225m funding boost (here), has announced that they’re expanding their gigabit-capable full fibre (FTTP) broadband network in the Midlands (England) city of Nottingham.

Internet provider Link Broadband, which is a smaller ISP that has tended to work with several alternative full fibre networks, appears to be in a spot of trouble after its website vanished a few days ago (now showing a “503 Service Unavailable” message) and some feedback alleges that it may even be at risk of imminent closure.

A new survey of 200 “senior telecom decision-makers” from the USA, UK, and Australia, which was conducted by network technology firm RtBrick, has claimed that broadband ISP and mobile operators are at risk of being “overwhelmed by the demands of AI and streaming bandwidth” in the next 5 years – around 80% of respondents expect it to “crush” today’s networks.

Virgin Media (O2) has revealed that their joint expansion of 2Gbps speed FTTP broadband (nexfibre and FTTP upgrades) have now reached 94,867 new homes in Belfast (Northern Ireland), 68,631 in Birmingham, 56,652 in Leeds, 65,121 in Coventry and 63,870 in Stoke-on-Trent. But interestingly, the provider still suggests nexfibre will reach their target of covering 5 million homes across the UK by 2026.

Edinburgh-based UK ISP and network builder GoFibre has this morning announced that they’ve secured a huge £125m funding boost from the Scottish National Investment Bank (SNIB) and Hamburg Commercial Bank. The money will support their roll-out of FTTP broadband under the government backed Project Gigabit contracts in South and North East Scotland.

Fibre optic network supplier Emtelle UK, which is a global manufacturer of blown fibre, cabling and ducted solutions, has been chosen to help supply GoFibre’s new £105m (state aid) Project Gigabit contract for North East Scotland (here), which aims to extend their full fibre broadband (FTTP) network to “around” 63,000 premises in hard-to-reach rural areas.

In a small but interesting update, the Government’s Building Digital UK (BDUK) agency has announced a string of new studies to evaluate the performance, delivery and value of its various mobile and broadband roll-out programmes – including Project Gigabit, Local Full Fibre Networks (LFFN), Shared Rural Network (SRN) and GigaHubs (extension of LFFN).

Mobile network operator and home broadband ISP EE (BT) is reportedly preparing to launch a second Wi-Fi 7 powered router “later this year“, which is intended to complement their existing Smart Hub Pro router (inc. Smart WiFi Pro mesh kit) that is sold alongside their fastest 1.6Gbps FTTP packages on Openreach’s network.

Network access provider Openreach (BT) has joined with a number of major new partners, including Arcadis, Thames Water, Cadent, Affinity Water and Lightsonic, to trial a couple of different approaches for detecting mains water and gas leaks, which cleverly works by harnessing the operator’s existing fibre optic broadband network.
