Openreach (BT) and Huawei have today offered a glimpse of a “hyperfast” future by conducting a live demo of their Fibre-to-the-Premise (FTTP/H) “consumer broadband” network running at an eye watering 100Gbps (Gigabits per second), but you won’t be able to get this at home anytime soon.

Mole ploughs to fishing rods, those are just some of the methods that Openreach (BT) have been using to roll-out “high-speed fibre broadband” (FTTC/P) across Northumberland. The operator has today also revealed that 1Gbps capable FTTP “will make up the vast majority” of their future deployment.

UK ISP Hyperoptic has now expanded their ultrafast Fibre-to-the-Building (FTTB/P) network into the London borough of Croydon, with 20 large residential apartment buildings (Multi-Dwelling Units) being among the first to benefit and 10 more undergoing installation or being planned for the future.

Rural ISP Gigaclear has announced that some 5,000 properties in West Berkshire have gained access to their new 1Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network, which is being rolled out under the Superfast Berkshire project as part of a state aid supported contract.

The latest Q1 2017 figures from the Government’s £1.6bn+ Broadband Delivery UK project has revealed that some 4,426,493 additional premises across the United Kingdom can now order a “superfast broadband” (24Mbps+) service as a result of their joint investment with local councils and the private sector.

The Broadband Stakeholder Group, which is a think-tank for the UK Government, has published a new report from Analysys Mason that proposes a number of changes for making it easier and cheaper for telecoms operators to deploy ultrafast 5G Mobile and “full fibre” (FTTP/H) broadband networks.

The BT Group has released their latest quarterly report (Q1 2017 calendar), which saw their retail broadband base reach a total of 9,276,000 subscribers (up by 29K vs 83K in Q4 2016) and Openreach has begun a consultation on the “potential benefits and costs of a large-scale FTTP deployment.“
