The Government’s Digital Economy Minister, Ed Vaizey, has turned a veiled criticism of Lancashire’s (England) Broadband Delivery UK programme (Superfast Lancashire) into some welcome praise for the alternative and community-built B4RN (Broadband 4 the Rural North) project.

The Highlands Council has agreed to commence a mapping exercise that aims to identify the remaining “not spots” in superfast broadband cover, which is to be accompanied by a workshop event next month to debate the issue. It’s hoped this will help to establish a clear plan for boosting coverage.

Telecoms giant BT has today announced an expansion of their “ultrafast fibre” broadband plans in the United Kingdom, which will see a pilot of 330-500Mbps capable G.fast technology going live with 25,000 premises in Cambridgeshire and Kent, as well as a new 1Gbps business FTTP pilot in Bradford.

Blink and you’ll miss it. Without any fanfare the Government’s Digital Economy Minister, Ed Vaizey, appears to have officially confirmed that 90% of the United Kingdom can now access a “superfast broadband” service, thanks partly to Phase 1 of their Broadband Delivery UK programme with BT.

A new report from IHS has said that Cityfibre’s Gigabit fibre optic (FTTP) broadband network will increase its coverage area from “15% of all UK households to 20%” by 2020, which will help to boost NGA Internet connections to 15.5 million. But the figures do require some clarification.

The Institute of Directors, which represents around 35,000 business leaders and directors, has called on the Government to go beyond their current ambition to deliver a Universal Service Obligation of 10Mbps broadband for all by 2020 and take us to 10,000Mbps by 2030.
