One of the key changes in last week’s Strategic Review, which saw Ofcom move to increase the separation between BT and the division responsible for its UK phone and broadband network (Openreach), was the proposal to introduce a new wholesale Duct and Pole Access (DPA) solution to help ISPs build alternative networks.

The CEO of BT Group, Gavin Patterson, has made a final plea ahead of tomorrow’s Strategic Review outcome and informed the Mobile World Congress event in Barcelona (Spain) that he would “significantly” increase investment (£1bn+) in order to further improve national broadband connectivity.

North East Somerset (England) ISP TrueSpeed Communications (formerly Wansdyke Telecom) has confirmed to ISPreview.co.uk that their new symmetric 100Mbps Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network should be going live in the rural village of Priston during April 2016.

The CEO of Sky UK (Sky Broadband), Jeremy Darroch, has today made a final plea in the hope of encouraging Ofcom to split BT from control of their national telecoms network (Openreach), which Darroch claims is the only way to encourage investment in 1Gbps+ FTTH/P broadband and to stop BT “[sweating] its copper assets” for slower connectivity.

BTOpenreach has announced that they are conducting a new trial of 330Mbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband technology with 500 homes on the North Swindon development of Haydon Wick. This will involve building fibre optic lines direct from the local telephone exchange.

Business ISP WarwickNet has announced that they’ve expanded their faster broadband network to three sites in Berkshire (England) to help local firms: Winnersh Triangle in Wokingham, as well as the Bennet Road and Cradock Road areas in Reading.

The Government’s Broadband Deliver UK programme has today published its latest quarterly performance report to the end of 2015, which reveals a bit more detail about the project’s progress. Overall 3,625,369 extra premises have now benefited and can order superfast broadband, with £406,918,848 of BDUK funding spent.

The FTTH Council Europe, which campaigns for the adoption of ultrafast Gigabit (1000Mbps+) capable Fibre-to-the-Home broadband technology, has published its latest global ranking of FTTH/P/B progress and unsurprisingly the United Kingdom still doesn’t even make it to the list.

The £410 million Digital Scotland project has so far helped to make BT’s “high-speed fibre broadband” (FTTC/P) network available to an additional 115,000 premises and this week the next batch of upgrade areas have been confirmed, including for the remote Highlands and Islands region.

BT’s forthcoming 300-500Mbps G.fast broadband technology won’t just be used to upgrade homes. The operator has also claimed a “world first” by using the G.fast to supply a cellular Cloud Radio Access Network (C-RAN) over copper lines, which could be used to support 4G and future 5G mobile services.

The £37m Superfast Dorset project in England has officially announced that 90% of premises in the county can now order a superfast broadband (24Mbps+) service thanks to their on-going roll-out of FTTC/P connectivity with BT, which has hit the target several months ahead of schedule.
