Subtopia Planning to Rollout Fibre Optic Broadband in Birmingham

The telecoms regulator, Ofcom, has today proposed to grant Code Powers to a fairly new company called Subtopia Ltd., which intends to roll-out “high-speed fibre optic and copper broadband services” for certain cities in the United Kingdom, starting with their home base of Birmingham (England).

Fibre optic ISP Hyperoptic has conducted a new study of 2,000 British adults that attempts to collate the sometimes poor performance of standard home broadband connections with the finding that 39% of respondents admitted to using their neighbours’ Internet connection by “stealing” their WiFi, which might be partly out of frustration with their own slow connections.

Suffolk UK to Meet Government’s Superfast Broadband Target in 2018

On Tuesday next week the Suffolk County Council in England will vote to approve a new plan that aims to extend their existing £40m Better Broadband for Suffolk project and make superfast broadband (24Mbps+) speeds available to 95% of the county, although it won’t complete until sometime in 2018 (later than the national target of 2017).

WarwickNet Bring Faster Broadband to Hundreds of Coventry Businesses

B4RN Connects 600 Homes to 1Gbps FTTH Broadband in Lancashire UK

The B4RN (Broadband for the Rural North) project has managed to connect 600 premises in rural Lancashire (England) to its new 1000Mbps (1 Gigabit per second) capable community built and funded Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH/P) network, with customers typically paying £30 per month for the service. But Cumbria and Yorkshire could soon see some B4RN action too.
