BT Commit GBP6.4m to Rollout Superfast Broadband in The Black Country

As expected BT has been chosen as the supplier for a £12.2 million Broadband Delivery UK based project in The Black Country (Dudley, Sandwell, Walsall and Wolverhampton – England’s West Midlands), which aims to make fixed line superfast broadband (24Mbps+) speeds available to 98% of local premises by mid-2017.

The boss of TalkTalk’s business division, Charles Bligh, has confirmed that the ISP ultimately wants 50-60% of homes in the United Kingdom to connect via their new ultrafast 1000Mbps Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network. But in order for this to work Bligh admits that take-up will need to be 30-40% or higher and the cost per home must be below £500. Difficult.

The Digital Dales (Fibre GarDen) project has today revealed how much locals in the rural communities of Garsdale and Dentdale (Cumbria, England) will have pay in order to receive a service from the new Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) based superfast broadband network, which is due to start construction on Monday 5th October 2014.

Study Finds Gigabit FTTH Broadband Communities Have Higher GDP

A new study from the Analysis Group, which was conducted on behalf of the American Fibre-to-the-Home Council, has claimed that communities with widely available 1Gbps (1000Mbps) broadband access through FTTH style fibre optic connectivity have per capita GDP that is 1.1% higher than communities with little to no availability of gigabit services.

As expected BT has now officially signed a new Broadband Delivery UK (BDUK) contract that will aim to roll-out FTTC/P based “fibre broadband” services to 98% of South Yorkshire (i.e. Barnsley, Doncaster, Rotherham and Sheffield) by the end of 2017.

The latest example comes from the Better Broadband for Suffolk project in England, which has just reached the 50,000 premises passed mark and now claims to be more than 6 weeks ahead of schedule.

Funding Woes as Middlesbrough Expands BT Fibre Broadband Rollout

The Middlesbrough Council in North East England has this week approved additional funding of £493k, which will be used to help make BT’s superfast broadband (FTTC/P) services available to 95% of people by 2017 (including an additional 500 local businesses).
