The £132m Superfast Cornwall project has announced that another 10 “hard-to-reach” rural communities will be able to receive access to BT’s “fibre broadband” (FTTC/P) network by early 2015, which will be an addition to the existing target of making the service available to 95% of Cornwall (England) and the Isles of Scilly by the end of 2014.

The Superfast North Yorkshire project in England has confirmed to ISPreview.co.uk that its first trial of BT’s new superfast Fibre-to-the-Remote-Node (FTTrN) broadband technology, which has the potential to deliver much faster and more stable speeds than the traditional Fibre-to-the-Cabinet (FTTC) service, is now being implemented and will be “ready to accept customer orders” in late 2014.

Superfast Wales Project Deploys Some Ultrafast 330Mbps FTTP Broadband

Believe it or not, Wales will be getting some 330Mbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband from BT as part of the local state aid supported £425m Superfast Cymru project. This aims to make faster “fibre broadband” (FTTC) speeds of up to 80Mbps available to 96% of Welsh premises by the end of spring 2016 (700,000 premises).

The incumbent ISP for Hull and its surrounding areas in East Yorkshire, KC (KCOM), has announced that they’re “laying claim” to the title of “village with the fastest broadband speeds in Britain” after pegging Brantingham for the achievement thanks to its average download speed of 78Mbps. Gigaclear and B4RN may have a thing or two to say about that.

Devon and Somerset UK Fall Short of Broadband Funding Target

The Connecting Devon and Somerset project in England has failed to match the full level of £22.75 million in funding offered by the Government’s Broadband Delivery UK (BDUK) Superfast Extension Programme, but it’s not a big deal because they still expect meet the national target and bring superfast broadband to 95% of the area by 2017.

The UK telecoms regulator has today published their annual 2014 Communications Market Report, which reveals how Next Generation Access (NGA) “superfast broadband” (30Mbps+) services are now available to 78% of the United Kingdom (up from 73% last year) and take-up has increased to 26.7% (up from 17.5% last year).

The Superfast Cymru scheme, which is working to make faster broadband speeds of up to 80Mbps available to 96% of premises in Wales by the end of spring 2016, has today announced the next 66 new locations across 10 local authority areas that will be enabled for “high speed fibre” (FTTC) by BT in time for June 2015.

Sky Broadband UK Growth Slows to Reach 5.247m Customers

Media and Internet giant Sky Broadband (BSkyB), which has just this morning gobbled Sky Italia and Sky Deutschland (here), has announced that their total home broadband base grew by only +50,000 during Q2-2014 to total 5,247,000 Internet access customers (down sharply from the +70k added in Q1-2014 and +110k in Q4-2013).

Cable Ship “Resolute” Brings Fibre Optic Broadband to the Isles of Scilly

The £132m Superfast Cornwall project has announced that the cable ship called ‘Resolute’ will today complete the first major phase of a £3.7m effort to divert two unused submarine fibre optic cables to the Isles of Scilly (the cables had previously been used for communications between the UK, Ireland and Spain).

OECD Rank UK 8th for Fixed Broadband Penetration as Fibre Optic Grows

The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development, which covers 34 countries that support democracy and a market economy, has reported that at the end of 2013 the United Kingdom ranked 8th for fixed line broadband penetration (i.e. 35.2 subscribers per 100 inhabitants). Fibre optic (FTTH/P/B) connections also continued to grow.
