Telecoms operator Vodafone has told ISPreview.co.uk that they have “no firm plans to launch” ultrafast broadband products based off Openreach’s (BT) new 330Mbps capable G.fast technology. Instead they intend to focus on preparing their new 1Gbps FTTH service for launch “later this year“.

Customers taking part in BT’s trial of the new ‘up to’ 330Mbps capable G.fast broadband technology, which aims to cover 10 million premises across the United Kingdom by the end of 2020, look set to receive a new SmartHub X wireless router that integrates the G.fast modem inside.

Openreach (BT) has announced that their new 330Mbps capable hybrid fibre G.fast broadband network is “now available” to thousands of people in Bath, Glasgow and Edinburgh, although none of the major ISPs have launched public packages and the final EMD phase still hasn’t begun.

Openreach (BT) has announced a new Proof of Concept (PoC) for their rollout of G.fast based “ultrafast broadband” (100Mbps+) services, which will see them offering to carry ISP Customer Premises Equipment (e.g. routers and modems) on their vehicles in order to help improve service delivery.

Openreach has started an unexpected third UK ISP trial of their long in the making Single Order Generic Ethernet Access (SOGEA) product, which will allow consumers to buy a standalone “fibre broadband” (FTTC VDSL2 or G.fast) line without the voice (phone) service.

The incumbent telecoms operator for Hull in East Yorkshire UK, KCOM, has today announced the final phase of their “Lightstream” roll-out, which will extend their “ultrafast” fibre optic broadband (FTTP/C) services to cover 100% of their network area (around 200,000 premises) by March 2019.

As Openreach begins to rollout their new 330Mbps capable hybrid fibre G.fast broadband service, which is set to reach 10 million UK premises by 2020, a new ISPreview.co.uk poll of 1,834 readers has found that 75.4% are interested in upgrading to the new service.

The incumbent phone and broadband provider for Hull in East Yorkshire, KCOM, as told the UK Government’s Digital Minister, Matt Hancock, that they will hit their target of 150,000 properties on their fibre optic network (FTTP/C) by the end of 2017 and will then extend this to “everyone in our network.”

The Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) has today determined that it is “not materially misleading” to describe broadband services that use fibre optic cables for only part of the connection to consumers’ homes (e.g. FTTC) as “fibre broadband“, much to the annoyance of UK MPs and critics.

The Hammersmith & Fulham Council in London UK has reached an agreement with Openreach (BT) that will see a further 2,000 homes and businesses being put within reach of their ‘up to’ 80Mbps capable Fibre-to-the-Cabinet (FTTC / VDSL2) superfast broadband network.

Openreach’s (BT) Modem Conformance Testing (MCT), which ensures that a router / modem device is approved for use on their hybrid fibre (FTTC) UK broadband network, needs to become much more accessible and transparent for consumers. Unapproved kit can also carry the risk of disconnection.

BT has today unveiled a £20 million commercial investment for Northern Ireland, which will enable them to deploy “ultrafast broadband” services to a further 140,000 homes and businesses by March 2019. This will “predominantly” involve their 1Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network.

The BT Group has published their latest results for Q3 2017 (calendar), which saw their retail broadband base add 22K subscribers to total 9,307,000 (up from 19K in Q2 vs 29K in Q1) and this includes 5.285 million “fibre broadband” FTTC/P users (up by 179K vs 170K in Q2 and 211K in Q1).

After conducting an industry consultation Openreach (BT) has today claimed that ISPs offered “broad support” for their proposal to conduct a “large scale” rollout of Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) ultrafast broadband across the UK, which could in theory reach 10 million premises by 2025. But no deal.. yet.

Israel-based Sckipio, which helped to build some of the kit that Openreach (BT) piloted as part of their 330Mbps G.fast broadband rollout, has today demonstrated over 3.1Gbps of download speed (900Mbps upload) on production silicon using G.fast bonding at 212MHz.

TalkTalk has unofficially revealed the prices for their new unlimited 150Mbps and 300Mbps ultrafast broadband products for those covered by Openreach’s (BT) new G.fast service, which is currently in the pilot phase (here) but should reach 1 million premises by the end of 2017 and 10 million by 2020.

Openreach (BT) has announced that they are to conduct a second Proof of Concept (PoC) trial of “Spectrum Refarming” technology, which in theory could result in a boost to broadband speeds by allowing different technologies (e.g. FTTC / VDSL2 and G.fast) to share the same spectrum frequency.
