Cross-Party UK Inquiry Finds Failing BT Must Invest More into Broadband

The cross-party Culture, Media and Sport Committee inquiry into the coverage and performance of “superfast broadband” in the United Kingdom has today published its outcome, which heavily criticises BT for “over-reliance” on its old copper network, “significantly” under investing in Openreach and their “lack of ambition” towards rolling out ultrafast FTTP/H services.

BT’s Trevor Linney Reveals G.fast Broadband UK Trial Results and Speed

The Head of Access Network Research at BT, Trevor Linney, has revealed some results from the recent trials of its 300-500Mbps capable G.fast broadband technology in Huntingdon, Swansea and Gosforth. Overall 75% of lines were able to deliver more than 300Mbps download (30-50Mbps upload).

Internet provider BT has today launched a new Smart Hub (aka – HomeHub 6) wireless router for subscribers of their ‘Infinity‘ superfast broadband (FTTC/P) packages, which offers improved WiFi performance, built-in 4G filters and other enhancements. But G.fast integration will have to wait.

California-based ASSIA, which sells services to broadband ISPs around the world and occasionally sues BT (here), has claimed that their new DSM Data Sharing technology could enable Openreach to offer “fully unbundled” G.fast to rival ISPs and boost its top speed to 400Mbps.

BT has released its latest Q1 2016 results (calendar), which reveals that their retail division has a total of 9,041,000 broadband subscribers (up by +1.045 million in Q1 vs +130K in Q4 2015) and 4.076m of those are taking their FTTC/P based BTInfinity superfast broadband service (up by +214k vs +250K at the end of 2015).
