Vodafone UK Could Boost Mobile Cover in the Shetland Islands with Femtocells

Mobile operator Vodafone UK has announced that two communities in the remote Shetland Islands (North of Scotland, UK), Hamnavoe and Walls, could soon benefit from faster mobile phone and Mobile Broadband connectivity after they were shortlisted to take part in the operators Open Femto trial.

comScore Reveals Mobile Broadband and WiFi Internet Use on UK Smartphones

Analyst firm comScore has revealed that 13% of iOS (Apple iPhone) and 43% of Android based Smartphone owners in the UK use only Mobile Broadband connectivity to go online, which rises to 87% and 57% respectively when both mobile and WiFi connectivity are used. Interestingly Three UK is the most popular network for mobile-only (3G) internet access, while Vodafone comes top when mobile and WiFi use is combined.

Mobile operator O2 UK has moved to combat the growing range of data-friendly packages from rivals Three UK and T-Mobile by launching a new Pay Monthly tariff called ‘On & On‘, which from £26 a month (from £36 with a new phone) bundles unlimited minutes with unlimited texts and 1GB (GigaByte) of Mobile Broadband usage (no extra data charges will apply after that is consumed).

The UK telecoms regulator, Ofcom, has started a new consultation that will look at the long term development options (after 2018) for handling the valuable radio spectrum in Ultra High Frequency (UHF) bands IV and V. One option could be to repurpose them for use by Mobile Broadband services.

The communications regulator, Ofcom, has today “provisionally” proposed to allow mobile operators T-Mobile and Orange UK (Everything Everywhere) to deploy a new generation of 4G (Long Term Evolution / LTE or WiMAX) superfast Mobile Broadband services over their existing 1800MHz radio spectrum. The group first put in a request to re-purpose the spectrum for 4G use during January 2012 (here).

Mobile operator Orange UK (Everything Everywhere) has admitted that an unspecified “configuration change” was responsible for yesterdays sporadic national outage of its Mobile Broadband (3G) services. The issue, which lasted most of the day for some customers, did not appear to affect T-Mobile’s shared network and was finally resolved during the early afternoon.

A new report created by Mott MacDonald for Ofcom has suggested that the much delayed auction of 800MHz and 2.6GHz radio spectrum, which will be used to deploy the next generation of 3G and 4G superfast Mobile Broadband services (e.g. LTE), could boost mobile coverage of the national UK rail network by including an “obligation for rail corridor coverage” in future licenses.

3 Mobile UK Scraps Out-of-Bundle Data Charges for Mobile Broadband

Mobile operator Three UK has announced that it is bringing an “end to out-of-bundle data charges for all new Smartphone contract customers“. Instead new customers will be given a choice between one of the operators all-you-can-eat (aka – “Ultimate Internet“) Mobile Broadband data offerings (from £18 a month) or a 250MB allowance with a “guarantee” of no out of bundle data charges.
