The CEO of Ofcom, Sharon White, has claimed that Openreach’s (BT) aspiration to conduct a “large-scale” rollout of 1Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband to 10 million UK homes and businesses by around 2025 is “dependent on up to £7 a month being added to broadband bills.”

The UK telecoms regulator, Ofcom, has opened a new consultation on a change to help foster the roll-out of “full fibre” (FTTP/H) broadband networks by preventing BT from reducing its wholesale charges for slower hybrid fibre (FTTC) connections in areas where rivals are building new networks.

Broadband Fixed Wireless Access (BFWA) ISPs could soon be able to offer faster connection speeds after Ofcom today confirmed their decision to release an extra 20MHz notch of radio spectrum in the 5.8GHz band (5725-5850MHz) for use by related internet access providers.

Ofcom has published their latest report into the use of media by UK children and parents, which among other things finds that around two in five parents of children aged 3-4 (39%) or 5-15 (37%) use network-level filters on their home broadband ISP. The vast majority of those find them useful.

The telecoms regulator has today made several changes to improve the performance of Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) providers, which are third-party ombudsman schemes that help consumers to resolve complaints with UK phone, broadband and mobile providers etc.

A new provider called Cambridge Fibre Networks, which doesn’t yet appear to have a website, has applied to Ofcom for Code Powers in order to help it construct a new multi-Gigabit speed “full fibre” (FTTH/P) broadband network for homes and businesses around the East and West of Cambridge.

The UK telecoms regulator has today announced that they are revoking and re-examining the changes imposed under their 2016 Business Connectivity Market Review (e.g. Dark Fibre Access), which follows a BT supported ruling from the Competition Appeal Tribunal against their market definitions.

The UK Court of Appeal has reversed an earlier ruling that found in favour of Ofcom’s proposed hike to annual licence fees for the 900MHz and 1800MHz (3G / 4G) radio spectrum bands, which could have resulted in price rises for consumers and less investment by Mobile Network Operators.

A new study from consumer magazine Which? has used data taken from over 700,000 speed tests conducted by Speedchecker Ltd (between January and March 2017) to claim that broadband ISPs could be overestimating their service speeds by up to 62%. Save for a few BIG caveats.

The Competition Appeal Tribunal has today handed down judgement against the market definitions used in Ofcom’s Business Connectivity Review, which upholds the July 2017 ruling (here) and means that the plan to cut leased line charges or force Openreach (BT) to offer Dark Fibre is still stalled.

As expected Ofcom has today set out the final details for their new automatic compensation system, which will force UK ISPs to compensate consumers (cash or bill credits) for a total loss of broadband connectivity, albeit only under certain circumstances (e.g. the outage lasts longer than 2 working days).

After conducting an industry consultation Openreach (BT) has today claimed that ISPs offered “broad support” for their proposal to conduct a “large scale” rollout of Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) ultrafast broadband across the UK, which could in theory reach 10 million premises by 2025. But no deal.. yet.

Last week’s agreement between BT and Ofcom to drop the provider’s retail line rental price from £18.99 to £11.99 a month for landline-only customers (here), which could soon be adopted by others, may have created an awkward problem for ISPs that still sell optional broadband services.
