Ookla, which runs the popular Speedtest.net service, has this week published their latest Q3 2020 study of UK fixed broadband and mobile data speeds across the market’s largest providers, which perhaps unsurprisingly sees Virgin Media (fixed) and EE (mobile) come top of the table.

Budget broadband ISP Plusnet has informed us that they’re refocusing their strategic direction, with a renewed push into the value market by “concentrating on its three core strengths – simplicity, reliability and award-winning customer service.” So it’s out with the old tag line – “we’ll do you proud” – and in the with the new – “that’ll do“.

In a predictable move UK broadband ISP Plusnet has today gone the same way as their parent (BT) by announcing their intention to hike prices, which will see future increases on contracts taken on or after October 7th 2020 being calculated by the Consumer Price Index (CPI) rate of inflation plus an additional 3.9%.

The Communications Workers Union (CWU) has threatened possible strike action against broadband and mobile giant BT after details of the operator’s plan to slash redundancy payments in half were leaked, which comes as many jobs are being lost due to the operator’s new office re-location strategy (closing many existing sites).

Ofcom has published their latest Q1 2020 consumer complaints report, which reveals that UK ISP Vodafone attracted the most gripes for broadband, while TalkTalk were the worst for landline phone and BT did the same for Pay TV. Meanwhile Vodafone, Three UK, BT and Virgin Media all tied the bottom spot for mobile.

Ofcom UK has published their 2020 survey of broadband and mobile service quality, call waiting times, complaints and install times among the largest ISPs and mobile operators. Overall TalkTalk attracted the lowest satisfaction for home broadband (78%) again, while Three UK were the same for mobile (89%).

BT has today published their Q1 2020/21 results, which reveals that Openreach has expanded their “ultrafast broadband” ISP network to cover 5.81 million UK premises (up from 5.4m last quarter) and that includes 2.98m on FTTP (up from 2.57m) and 2.83m on G.fast (up from 2.81m). Plus 5G via EE is now live in 100 cities and towns.

Industry regulator Ofcom has today secured new commitments from UK ISPs EE, Plusnet and Sky Broadband to reduce prices automatically for “vulnerable customers” who are out of contract, which mirrors a similar move agreed last year with BT, TalkTalk and Virgin Media. Savings of £270m are forecast.

Customers of budget UK ISP Plusnet have informed us that they’ve been notified of an annual price increase on their broadband and phone line rental services, but the good news is that the cost will only be going up by 1.5% in line with the Consumer Price Index (CPI) rate of inflation (as published by the ONS for April 2020).

UK ISP Plusnet has introduced new discounts on their ADSL and FTTC based broadband and phone packages, which reduce their monthly prices for the first 18 month contract term. On top of that they’ve also thrown in a “Reward Card” (pre-paid Mastercard) worth between £50 to £60.

Once again we’ve taken our biannual look back to see how average download and upload speeds have changed across the fastest nationally available fixed line ISPs and mobile operators. Overall the COVID-19 crisis has produced a broad downward trend in H1 2020, but Virgin Media remains top for fixed lines and EE top for mobile.

Ofcom has published their latest Q4 2019 consumer complaints data, which reveals that UK ISP Vodafone attracted the most gripes for broadband, while Plusnet were the worst for landline phone and Virgin Media sat on the naughty step for Pay TV. On the flip side Sky (Sky Broadband, Sky TV) attracted the fewest moans from consumers.

Ofcom has published their annual report into fixed line home broadband speeds, which finds that the average download rate has risen from 54.2Mbps last year to 64Mbps now (uploads from 7.2Mbps to 14Mbps). It also examines the performance and latency of big ISPs including BT, Sky Broadband, TalkTalk, Virgin Media and others.

Customers of UK ISP Plusnet may be interested to know that the provider has announced that they’ve removed the option of their annual Line Rental Saver (LRS) discount (i.e. pay for 12 months in advance to save money) from their acquisition journey for new home broadband services.

The annual Broadband Genie 2020 survey has today presented several awards to Zen Internet and Direct Save Telecom (DST), which saw both UK ISPs scoop wins across multiple categories. In particular Zen scooped the “Best Broadband Provider” accolade among others, while DST won for value and customer care.

Yesterday was an important day for broadband ISPs in the United Kingdom because it was the first working Monday after the mass closure of schools, which has concentrated the demands of both home (remote) working and family internet traffic on to residential connectivity. But as expected the day was busy, albeit uneventful.

Comparison site Broadband Genie has today revealed the winners of their broadband speed awards, which covers different categories across standard, superfast and ultrafast connections. Overall Hyperoptic, a full fibre (FTTP/B) ISP that serves apartment blocks, was named the fastest ISP for both downloading and uploading.
