The latest Q3 2022 Ofcom survey of UK consumer complaints has, once again, named ISP Shell Energy as attracting the most consumer gripes for both fixed line broadband and landline phone services, while BT and Virgin Mobile did the same for Pay Monthly Mobile services and Virgin Media for Pay TV.

The UK telecoms and media regulator, Ofcom, has this morning opened an investigation into broadband ISP and telecoms giant BT (including subsidiaries EE and Plusnet), which focuses upon their compliance with its obligation to provide customers with clear and simple contract information before they sign up to a new deal.

BT’s consumer division (inc. EE and Plusnet) has today set out their approach to this year’s annual price hikes, which will see them increase their broadband, phone and other prices by the contracted CPI of 10.5% plus 3.9% – for a total of 14.4% – for the “majority” of their customers from 31st March. But there are exceptions.

Most of the major UK broadband ISPs can now confirm how much their annual price hikes will be after the Office of National Statistics (ONS) published their latest UK inflation figures, which saw the Consumer Price Index (CPI) hit 10.5% (up from 5.4% in Jan 2022) and the Retail Price Index (RPI) reach 13.4% (up from 7.5%).

Credible sources have informed ISPreview.co.uk that customers of UK broadband ISP Plusnet (part of the BT Group) may soon lose the ability to directly add BT Sport TV to their service (this currently costs from an extra £17.15 a month), with the feature allegedly due to then be closed by June 2023.

As if 2022 wasn’t already devastating enough for the UK cost-of-living, the annual price hikes season is about to hit again for customers of the largest broadband ISPs and mobile operators, which for the second year running is expected to be driven by another huge increase in inflation. Expect hikes of around 14% or more.

Budget UK ISP Plusnet, which is part of the BT Group, appears to have now officially stopped taking on new SME (small and medium-sized) business customers. A message on their website confirms that the products are “no longer available” and instead directs new customers to take up packages directly with BT.

The latest Q2 FY23 results to September 2022 have today been released by the BT Group, which saw the coverage of Openreach’s Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP network reach 8.76 million premises (up by 805k in the quarter vs 763k last quarter). Meanwhile, EE’s 5G customers topped 8.157 million (up from 7.74m).

Ofcom’s 2022 study of fixed line home broadband ISP speeds has reported that the average (median) UK download rate has risen from 50.4Mbps last year to 59.4Mbps now (uploads went from 9.8Mbps to 10.7Mbps). But the performance gap between rural and urban areas has “widened” (unsurprising with so much urban FTTP build).

Budget UK ISP Plusnet, which is part of the wider BT Group, has announced that from today it will no longer be providing managed broadband and phone services to new residential customers under the John Lewis brand and the service will eventually close.

The latest data from Ookla, which operates the popular Speedtest.net website, is beginning to show the sort of impact that the new generation of alternative full fibre broadband networks (AltNets) are having across the UK. But for now, the seven largest ISPs still dominate the country’s fixed broadband market.

UK ISP Plusnet has today moved to slightly sweeten the offers on their new range of cheaper Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) powered home ultrafast broadband packages – provided over Openreach’s national network, which sees the provider shaving a couple of extra pounds off each of the plans.

Ofcom has confirmed that they will update their 2019 voluntary Code of Practice for Broadband ISP Speeds, which among other things will extend the current “Right to Exit” (i.e. when an ISP fails to correct a speed problem) so that it applies to more aspects of a service bundle. The changes will go live on 21st December 2022.

The CEO of BT’s Consumer division, Marc Allera, has revealed that the future of their low-cost phone and broadband ISP sub-brand, Plusnet, is under assessment. The move is understood to form part of their ongoing work to turn EE – over time – into their “flagship brand for our consumer customers“.

Mobile operators and some broadband ISPs including Vodafone, BT, EE, Plusnet, iD Mobile, O2 and Virgin Media have in the last week responded, separately, to the massive floods in Pakistan by giving their UK customers free calls to the country and roaming.
