ISP Lothian Broadband, which last year proposed to extend their 1Gbps Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network to cover 50,000 premises across rural parts of East and Mid Lothian, has secured a major funding boost of £20m from the Scottish National Investment Bank (SNIB) and their rollout target has been raised to 70,000 premises.

Last August we reported that a subsidiary of French provider Axione, Axione Fibre (Axione UK), planned to build a new gigabit speed open-access wholesale Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network for ISPs to harness in the UK (here), which was backed by £300m (equity) of initial funding. We now know the first piece of their rollout plan.

The latest independent biannual summary of UK broadband coverage for H2 2021 has estimated that “full fibre” (FTTP) ISP networks have now increased their reach to 30.23% of premises (up from 24.33% in H1 2021), while 65.27% are within reach of “gigabit” speeds (up from 41.72%) and 67.63% can get 100Mbps+ (up from 66.9%).

Inverness-based broadband ISP BrawBand (HighNet), which currently sells home broadband services over CityFibre’s new gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network in locations such as Inverness, Glasgow and Renfrewshire, has today launched a new pay TV service via Netgem’s platform.

Ofcom has released their Connection Nations 2021 UK digital infrastructure report, which reveals that the coverage of “gigabit-capable” (1Gbps+) broadband ISP networks has jumped from 27% last year to 47% now (13.7 million households). Plus, around half of UK properties are in areas where 5G mobile is available outside.

The MP for the small city of Stirling in Scotland, Alyn Smith (SNP), has revealed that CityFibre, which recently completed the rollout of a new Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP network for over 20,000 premises in the city, may soon extend this network to reach thousands of premises in nearby villages.

Mobile operator EE (BT) has this morning announced plans to upgrade over 2,000 network sites by June 2024 to help extend 4G coverage (voice and mobile broadband) into rural parts of the UK and to significantly reduce partial not-spots, which forms part of their commitment under the £1bn Shared Rural Network (SRN) project.

Scotland ISP Fibrecast, which has previously deployed their own ultrafast wireless and fibre broadband network around the City Quay area of Dundee and the Airport business park, has today announced that they’ll also be selling services to homes over CityFibre’s new 1Gbps Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network in the city.

Two new UK Alternative Network (altnet) builders – 4 Fibre (SCCI Group) and Converged Communication Solutions – have today revealed their tentative plans to rollout or expand an existing Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP network across some very different parts of the country.

CityFibre has this week carried out their earlier threats by launching an appeal via the Competition Appeal Tribunal (CAT) to challenge Ofcom’s recent approval of Openreach’s “Equinox” offer (here), which introduced a “major” price cut (details) to the incumbents Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband products for UK ISPs.

The Government has unveiled a new agreement with the four primary mobile network operators, including Vodafone, EE (BT), O2 (VMO2) and Three UK, which among other things will see existing 2G and 3G signals being “phased out” by 2033 (benefitting 4G / 5G services and mobile broadband) and a new target for OpenRAN adoption.

Nokia and CityFibre have teamed up in Glasgow (Scotland) to conduct the UK’s first successful demonstration of a trial that used their full fibre 25G PON kit to fuel backhaul capacity for a 5G mobile (mobile broadband) network, which was used for a holographic call between buildings, teleoperation of a robotic arm and 8K video streaming.

UK ISP Virgin Media (VMO2) has today confirmed that their entire network of 1.2 million premises in Scotland now have access to gigabit broadband speeds (1130Mbps downloads and 52Mbps up), although this figure includes some areas that have previously already been upgraded to the DOCSIS 3.1 standard.

The Scottish Government has announced that their Interim Broadband Voucher Scheme, which forms part of the £600m Reaching 100% (R100) project and is designed to help rural premises in the hardest to reach areas get a faster connection installed, has been extended to 31st March 2022 (it was previously due to finish this month).

The UK Government’s £5bn Project Gigabit rollout programme appears to have quietly confirmed that they now aim to deliver “full” 1Gbps broadband coverage to the final 20% of hardest to reach premises by 2030 (effectively universal coverage), at least where it is “value for money to do so.”

Openreach (BT) has today officially added another 170 new towns and villages (covering 1.5 million premises) to the UK rollout plan of their 1Gbps Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP network, which are all the same as those we published last month (here). The news comes as they reach 6 million premises passed.
