The Scottish Government and the Building Digital UK (BDUK) agency have quietly revealed that they intend to publish the first official contract notice for the Project Gigabit broadband rollout scheme in Scotland, starting this month. Some £450m has already been allocated (here) to help this project spread 1Gbps speeds across rural Scotland.

The Government has today announced that the first of 86 new state aid supported 4G mobile masts in rural parts of Wales have been upgraded and switched-on. The work forms part of the £1bn industry-led Shared Rural Network project (i.e. extending 4G mobile / broadband cover to 95% of the UK by the end of 2025) with EE, Three UK, O2 and Vodafone.

Network operator nexfibre, which shares the same parentage as Virgin Media (VMO2), has this morning published a new quarterly (Q1 2024) progress update on their work to deploy a new 10Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP / XGS-PON) broadband ISP network across up to 7 million UK premises.

The UK’s independent public spending watchdog, the National Audit Office (NAO), has today published a new report into £1bn industry-led Shared Rural Network project (i.e. extending 4G mobile / broadband cover to 95% of the UK by the end of 2025), which finds that it’s “behind schedule” and at risk of cost overruns.

Edinburgh-based business broadband ISP Commsworld has announced that they’ve secured a 10-year contract – worth £2.6m – from Dundee City Council (DCC) to help plan, design, migrate and manage a “completely new fibre network service” for 42 schools in and around the city.

Rural broadband ISP and network builder GoFibre (BorderLink), which is deploying a 10Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network around parts of the North of England and Scottish Borders, has expanded the availability of their existing £50k GoFurther charity fund to Aberdeenshire and Angus.

Scottish ISP Lothian Broadband (LBN), which is building a 10Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP / XGS-PON) network across rural parts of East Lothian, the Highlands and Fife, has announced that their network rollout is now being expanded across rural parts of the Black Isle area.

The Shetland MSP, Beatrice Wishart, has called on the Scottish Government (SG) to “rethink” the Scottish Broadband Voucher Scheme (SBVS) after it was revealed that only around 3-4% of the c.80,000 homes and businesses eligible for support under this measure had taken it up.

Mobile network analyst firm Streetwave has today published the results of a new real-world benchmark, which examined the mobile operator performance of EE (BT), O2 (Virgin Media), Vodafone and Three UK across the country’s capital city of London. Suffice to say that EE came out top for mobile broadband speeds and network coverage.

Leicester-based broadband ISP Gigabit Networks has today announced that they’ve extended the availability of their full fibre (FTTP and Ethernet) services and packages, via CityFibre’s national UK network, to include the Scottish cities of Edinburgh, Glasgow and Renfrewshire for the first time.

Technical UK consultancy firm FarrPoint has today published their second annual (2024) survey of digital leaders at councils across England, Scotland and Wales. The results reveal that getting more areas covered by gigabit broadband is still the top priority for the second year running, while 5G divides opinion.

Mobile operator O2 (Virgin Media) has today highlighted the deployment of a new mobile mast to boost 4G (mobile broadband) coverage on the remote rural Shetland island, which sits far away off the north coast of Scotland. Several more masts are due to follow under the £1bn Shared Rural Network (SRN) project.

In an unsurprising development, the Scottish Government recently issued a new contract notice to help it commission an evaluation study of their £600m Reaching 100% (R100) “superfast broadband” (30Mbps+) rollout programme with Openreach (BT), which will aim to assess the project’s Value for Money.

Yesterday the First Minister of the Scottish Government, Humza Yousaf, revealed that the £600m Reaching 100% (R100) broadband upgrade project with Openreach (BT) “remains on track to complete build … by 2028” and had so far covered “more than 36,100 premises“. But in October 2023 the figure was stated as 42,000, so which is correct?

Mobile network analysts at Streetwave have published the results of a new real-world benchmark into mobile network performance across the city of Edinburgh in Scotland, which concluded that Three UK delivered the “fastest network” (mobile broadband) across most homes. But Vodafone had the fastest average upload speeds.
