The government and mobile operators have officially started activating the new UK-wide Emergency Alerts service, which has been designed to warn mobile users if there’s a “danger to life nearby” (e.g. severe flooding, fires and extreme weather). But it will only work on modern 4G and 5G Smartphones.

Two of the internet’s most popular secure messaging platforms, WhatsApp and Signal, have now both said that they would rather be blocked by the UK’s controversial new Online Safety Bill (OSB) than undermine the security (end-to-end encryption) of their platforms by allowing private messages to be filtered and moderated.

The National Audit Office has today published an assessment of the progress being made by the UK Government’s 4G based Emergency Services Network (ESN), which finds that it continues to be massively over budget and has “fallen further behind schedule“. In fact, not even the Home Office knows when it’ll be ready, but 2029 or later is hinted.

The UK Government’s Technology Secretary, Michelle Donelan MP, will today re-introduce the new Data Protection and Digital Information Bill (DPDI No.2) to parliament, which among other things will increase fines for nuisance calls and texts to be either up to 4% of global turnover or £17.5 million, whichever is greater.

New data from caller ID verification firm Hiya, which also works with UK broadband ISP BT (EE) to help detect and block SPAM and fraud calls, has today claimed that 28% of non-contact calls in the United Kingdom were identified as spam in 2022. Plus, the UK also comes out as the worst in Europe for “phone fraud“.

The CEO of network operator Upp, Drew Ritchie, which is deploying a new Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network in the East of England, has told ISPreview.co.uk that discussions over the forced sale of their business by the Government are “progressing well” and that in the meantime their “build is continuing at pace.”

The UK Government’s Secretary of State for Business, Grant Shapps, has ordered investment company LetterOne (L1T FM Holdings UK) to sell its entire stake in alternative broadband network provider Upp (formerly Fibre Me) in order to “prevent, remedy, or mitigate the risk to national security“.

The UK Government has confirmed the mess of confusing legislation that is the Online Safety Bill (OSB), which attempts to clampdown on “harmful” internet content (i.e. via fines, website blocks by broadband ISPs and other sanctions), will return to Parliament “next week” (5th Dec) with some key changes.

The UK Government’s new Product Security and Telecommunications Infrastructure Bill (PSTI) is finally set to become law after passing through both houses of parliament this week. The new law will, among other things, make it easier for full fibre broadband and mobile operators to upgrade, share and deploy new infrastructure.

The UK telecoms regulator, Ofcom, has today introduced new rules that will require phone providers to crackdown on “fake phone numbers” by identifying and blocking “spoofed calls“, where feasible. The move aims to tackle a problem that, during the summer, resulted in 40.8 million people being targeted by suspicious calls and texts.

The UK Government has announced that network providers (e.g. broadband ISPs and mobile operators) will become subject to new regulations – under the Telecommunications (Security) Act – from 1st Oct 2022, which aside from restricting the use of Huawei, will also impose changes to make networks safer from cyberattack.

Mobile operator EE – including broadband ISPs BT and Plusnet – have today revealed that they’ve blocked 11 million international scam calls since July, with the rate rising to 1 million a day. This comes after they launched a new AI powered firewall to filter out callers from international locations posing to be from UK-based numbers for legitimacy.
