After a long wait the much delayed second phase of the Connecting Devon and Somerset project, which suffered a setback in June 2015 after failing to reach a deal to extend “superfast broadband” (24Mbps+) coverage with BT, has finally begun a new £39.5m procurement.

Two councillors for the Bath and North East Somerset area in England, Karen Walker and Sarah Bevan, have claimed that around 70 homes in the large village of Peasedown St John have been left without an upgrade to BT’s FTTC based “fibre broadband” network because of an “administrative error.”

Ultra-fast fibre optic ISP Gigaclear have announced that they are “set to bring” their 1Gbps Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network to at least part of the vast rural Blackdown Hills area, which straddles the border between Somerset and Devon in England.

The South Somerset District Council (SSDC) has stalled plans to put £640,000 into the central Connecting Devon and Somerset (CDS) programme because of uncertainty over how the clawback reinvestment from BT and plans for a 10Mbps Universal Service Obligation might impact the roll-out.

The £94m Connecting Devon and Somerset project in England has announced the introduction of a new subsidy scheme (worth up to £500 per property), which is designed to help those stuck on sub-2Mbps broadband speeds to get a 10Mbps or faster connection installed.
