The telecoms regulator, Ofcom, has quietly scrapped another fixed broadband related performance report – this time it’s their annual international comparison, which pits the United Kingdom’s broadband and mobile connectivity against the EU’s major economies (France, Germany, Spain and Italy etc.) and some other large countries.

Broadband ISP and mobile giant VMO2 (Virgin Media and O2) has today published their Q4 2023 results, which suggests that their full fibre (FTTP) coverage via nexfibre has grown to add another c.299,000 premises (up from 251k in Q3) and Virgin’s fixed broadband base slowed its growth to 5,717,600 (up by 9.5k in Q4 vs 40.8k in Q3).

European benchmarking firm nPerf has just published the results from their annual 2024 crowdsourced study into UK fixed broadband ISP performance, which finds that subscribers of Virgin Media, Fibrus and Vodafone enjoyed the best internet connection performances over the past year.

Mobile network analyst firm Streetwave has today published the results of a new real-world benchmark, which examined the mobile operator performance of EE (BT), O2 (Virgin Media), Vodafone and Three UK across the country’s capital city of London. Suffice to say that EE came out top for mobile broadband speeds and network coverage.

The results reveal that getting more areas covered by gigabit broadband is still the top priority for the second year running, while 5G divides opinion.

Crowdsourced benchmarking firm Opensignal, which collects data from consumer speedtests, has today published a new summary of mobile broadband (4G and 5G) speeds across Europe – based on data from Q4 2023. But if you want to find the UK, you’ll need to look toward the bottom of the tables.

The UK telecoms regulator, Ofcom, has today moved to strengthen their existing rules against the use of “fake phone numbers” and “spoofed calls“, which involves a proposal for phone providers (fixed line and mobile) to introduce stricter measures against “Presentation Numbers” that are used to identify who is making a call.

Broadband and telecoms giant BT Group has today posted a short trading update for the last quarter to December 2023, which reveals that Openreach expanded the UK coverage of their Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) based broadband ISP network by another 950,000 premises (up from 860k last quarter) to total 13 million passed.

A new Opinium survey of 4,000 UK adults, which was commissioned by Uswitch, has claimed that 44% of renters – who typically move home more frequently than any other group – remain locked into 18-24 month contracts with their broadband provider and 23% had to pay exit fees to leave their ISP when their tenancy agreement ended.

Mobile network analyst firm RootMetrics (Ookla) has published their latest biannual H2 2023 benchmark study of UK mobile networks (4G and 5G) and mobile broadband performance, which once again sees EE (BT) come top against rivals at Vodafone, Three UK and O2 (VMO2). But the picture for 5G performance isn’t so clear-cut.

Ofcom has published their latest study of UK consumer complaints for Q3 2023, which names Virgin Media as the worst for attracting the most gripes about fixed broadband, landline phone and pay TV services. Meanwhile, O2, which is part of the same company, attracted the most complaints for Pay Monthly Mobile services.

The Institute of Customer Service (ICS) has today published their first biannual UK Customer Satisfaction Index for January 2024, which reveals that three telecoms providers made it into their table of the country’s top 50 organisations, including Tesco Mobile (5th), Giffgaff (23rd) and Sky Mobile (42nd). The odd broadband ISP also gets a nod.

The latest research from Point Topic has revealed that world fixed broadband lines grew by 1.6% (22.39 million) in Q3 2023 to total 1.42 billion connections, which compares with 1.87% (24.59m) in the same quarter last year. But the subscriber growth rate of “full fibre” (FTTP/B) networks in the UK almost stalled in the latest quarter.

Network testing and benchmarking firm MedUX has today published new research, which examines the performance and quality of 5G (mobile broadband) networks – including EE (BT), O2 (VMO2), Vodafone and Three UK – across London. The results indicate that EE is leading the pack in most areas, at least in the UK’s capital.

Mobile network analysts at Streetwave have published the results of a new real-world benchmark into mobile network performance across the city of Edinburgh in Scotland, which concluded that Three UK delivered the “fastest network” (mobile broadband) across most homes. But Vodafone had the fastest average upload speeds.

A new OnePoll UK survey of 2,560 adults based in London, which was commissioned by London-focused broadband ISP and network builder G.Network, has claimed that 17% of people in the capital lose more than a day each year waiting for slow and unreliable internet connections.
