Broadband and mobile provider Virgin Media and O2 (VMO2) has today stated that their adoption of AI-based improvements to their automated phone system, as well as cross-skilling 5,000 agents and simplifying team structures, has reduced the number of calls transferred by its agents by 1.3 million in 2025 – saving customers around 400,000 hours of their time.

Network access provider Openreach (BT) has today revealed that broadband usage across their UK network increased by 4.8% in 2025 (down from 10.5% in 2024) to total 108,599 PetaBytes (PB) of data (up from 103,590PB), with December once again being the busiest month – 10,317PB of data was gobbled (up from 9,707PB last year).

Macquarie-backed telecoms provider KCOM, which have deployed their own full fibre broadband (FTTP) network across 305,000 premises in parts of East Yorkshire (primarily Hull) and Lincolnshire (England), has revealed that customers in the Hull area consumed 2,500,000 GigaBytes (GB) of data traffic on Christmas Day 2025 (500,000GB more than usual) – it’s “busiest day ever for online traffic“.

In somewhat of an unusual move, internet provider TalkTalk has today attempted to predict which major dates and events in 2026 will drive the most traffic across their UK broadband network. For example, the ISP is forecasting up to an 8% surge in network usage during the 2026 World Cup’s initial stages and a 15% increase for the Grand Theft Auto 6 launch (16th Nov 2026).

A new study from Broadband Genie has analysed 145,926 internet speed tests in order to identify the top slowest and fastest ten UK streets for broadband. The slowest street was found to be Heol-Y-Fedw (Cymmer) in Wales on an average download of just 0.81Mbps (Megabits per second), while the fastest was Inglewood Avenue in Derby (England), where residents enjoy speeds of 1.21Gbps (1,210Mbps).

Internet provider Virgin Media (O2) has kindly furnished ISPreview with some general traffic stats from their fixed broadband network over the festive period, which for example reveals that Christmas Day internet traffic was up 11% on last year (broadly in line with traffic growth generally). But compared to an average Thursday in 2025, traffic was up by 22%.

ISPreview has today published our biannual H2 – 2025 summary of fixed broadband coverage, which reveals that “full fibre” (FTTP) ISP networks have grown to reach 81.89% of UK premises (up from 78.06% in H1) and 89.6% are within reach of “gigabit” 1000Mbps+ speeds (up from 87.84%) – close to the major milestone of 90%. Rochdale-based UK broadband ISP Zen Internet has this morning revealed that average network traffic across their service rose by 21% during 2025, with the highest peak of data usage being set on 11th November 2025 (22% above last year’s peak) – largely driven by live football streaming (this often dominated peak demand).

ISPreview is today ending 2025 by taking our annual look back to see how the United Kingdom’s position, in terms of the top 50 fastest countries for fixed broadband and mobile speeds (4G, 5G), has changed since 2024. Overall, the UK’s global rank for mobile speed is now 59th (down from 53rd last year), while our ranking for fixed broadband is 44th (unchanged).

Internet, phone and TV provider Virgin Media (O2) has revealed new insights and consumer survey results from their broadband network, which uses data from the end of last year to highlight how customers use their network over Christmas. Suffice to say that traffic on Christmas Day follows a “markedly different pattern” to a typical day, with network activity peaking at 11am, followed by a noticeable drop-off later in the day.

Internet connection testing firm Opensignal has today published their 2025 Fixed Broadband Experience report, which gauges the performance of major ISPs across the UK including BT (inc. EE), Sky Broadband, TalkTalk, Three UK, Virgin Media and Vodafone. Overall, Virgin Media scored wins in every single national connectivity category.

Telecoms giant Virgin Media and O2 (VMO2) has today released their 2025 Year in Review to explore how Brits lived online in 2025, which reveals “record levels” of data consumption including an 8% rise in broadband usage (down from 8.1% in 2024) and an 18% rise in mobile traffic through the year (up from 9%) – driven by growing use of AI, live sports and major game releases.

Network testing firm Ookla, which collects data from consumers via their popular broadband Speedtest.net service, has this morning published a new analysis of mobile 4G and 5G network data performance across UK local authorities in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. The UK-wide median mobile download speed rose 15% to 63.03Mbps in 2025, but big gaps remain.

The Northern Irish Department for the Economy (DfE) has today announced that they’ve awarded the £34.6m (public subsidy) Project Gigabit broadband roll-out contract to alternative network ISP Fibrus, which will be tasked with extending their Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network to reach 9,000 of the hardest to reach rural homes and businesses.

The telecoms regulator has today published their annual Online Nation 2025 report, which examines how we all use and interact with the internet in the United Kingdom. Overall, it found that 95% of people aged 16+ have access to the internet at home, and the average time spent per day online (excluding work) is 4 hours and 30 minutes (up 10 mins from last year).
