A new Opinium survey of 2,000 UK adults (weighted to be nationally representative), which was commissioned by Uswitch.com, has claimed that more than 5 million people (9.8%) have seen their phone connect to an overseas network while they were still in the UK, triggering a roaming charge or alert. But 76% of respondents still think this is “impossible” or have never heard of it.

Ookla (Accenture), which operates the popular broadband Speedtest.net benchmarking service, has today published a new report that evaluates metrics like 5G upload capacity, latency under load, and cloud infrastructure pathways across 22 countries in order to identify how well they’ll handle AI workloads.

We’ve today published our biannual summary of fixed broadband coverage for the first half (H1) of 2026, which reveals that “full fibre” (FTTP) ISP networks have grown to reach 85.05% of UK premises (up from 81.89% in H2 2025) and 91% are within reach of “gigabit” 1000Mbps+ speeds (up from 89.6%). Global internet connection benchmarking firm Ookla (Accenture), which operates the popular broadband Speedtest.net tool and Downdetector service (among other things), has decided to publish their own ranking of the last 32 countries participating in the FIFA World Cup 2026 – but it’s based on fixed broadband speeds rather than football.

A new study of 2,000 UK adults, which was conducted in May 2026 by UK ISP CommunityFibre, has claimed that more than half of Londoners (51%) are currently tied into a contract or subscription they believe is too expensive, while one in five say their broadband “costs more than they would like“.

Last night’s FIFA World Cup 2026 last-16 match between England and Mexico, which saw us walk away with the win after 3 goals (Mexico scored 2), caused an abnormal increase in broadband and mobile traffic across the small hours of the morning as many people stayed awake to watch the event.

SpeedGeo UK Mobile and Broadband Speedtest Study

The SpeedGeo project, which compares internet connection quality by benchmarking the speeds of real users, has published their Q2 2026 results and once again named Virgin Media as the fastest fixed broadband ISP. At the same time they’ve also named Three UK as the fastest mobile broadband (4G, 5G) operator. But there are caveats.

The latest annual ORESA Growth Index 2026 has just been published and this year’s edition includes five alternative full fibre broadband networks – Toob, Netomnia, Grain Connect, CommunityFibre and Fibrus. The full list ranks the UK’s 100 fastest-growing private companies by compound annual growth rate (CAGR) – those with at least £5m in recent sales.

Mobile operator O2 (Virgin Media) has revealed that yesterday’s FIFA World Cup 2026 match between England and DR Congo (2 – 1) fuelled the “biggest mobile traffic event ever recorded” on their mobile network, which saw mobile data (broadband) traffic peak 20.38% higher than the prior peak (during the Arsenal vs PSG UEFA Champions League Final) and 27.67% above a comparable pre-tournament week. EE (BT) reported similar.

Rural broadband ISP and alternative network builder Wessex Internet, which is deploying a mix of full fibre (FTTP) and fixed wireless networks across Southern England, has published their annual accounts to the end of 2025. The report reveals that revenues jumped by 47.7% to £8.5m in the year and their network coverage passed 66,000 premises.

A new MSE survey of 47,000 tariffs – all from UK mobile and broadband providers with the biggest market share – has found that Ofcom’s latest policy to improve the transparency of mid-contract price hikes actually seems to have resulted in consumers paying more for their service.

Network analyst firm Streetwave has published the partial results from a new study that compared the real-world mobile network (4G, 5G) and mobile broadband performance from EE, O2, Vodafone and Three UK across the District Line, which runs from Whitechapel to Wimbledon.

The goal is to enable operators, investors and industry watchers to benchmark performance and identify emerging trends.

France-based internet connection benchmarking firm nPerf has this morning published the results from their first biannual (H1) 2026 crowdsourced study into fixed broadband ISP speeds among “countries comparable in size to Romania“, which saw the United Kingdom rank 2nd with an overall score of 126,638 nPoints (just behind Romania on 128,587).

A new study from Broadband Genie, which analysed 144,067 web-based broadband speed tests over an unspecified 12-month period, has claimed that 18% households in the UK are receiving “broadband” download speeds slower than the Universal Service Obligation (USO) of 10Mbps download or 1Mbps upload. But take that claim with a pinch of salt.

Energy and communications provider Telecom Plus, trading as Utility Warehouse (UW), has today published their latest H2 FY26 Results to the end of March 2026 and revealed that their broadband ISP grew its total UK customer base to 568,647 (up from 561,086 in H1) and their mobile base grew to 787,426 (up from 698,054).

Broadband ISP BT has informed ISPreview that last Friday’s (19th June) FIFA World Cup 2026 match between Scotland v Morocco, which kicked off at 11pm BST (UK time), sent streaming demand across their network soaring, with a 544% increase in peak traffic through ITVX compared with an average evening.
