Rural full fibre broadband ISP Gigclear has posted the results of an interesting new survey, which questionably claims that a fifth of British people wait “over half an hour for a simple web page to load” and 1 in 10 are “left buffering for up to two and a half hours.” Hmm.

A new YouGov poll of 1,000 UK adults in London, which was conducted between 2-6th July 2020 and commissioned by full fibre broadband ISP G.Network (vested interest), has claimed that 59% of London residents would want to keep working from home at least some days of the week if only their broadband was better.

New research from Point Topic has found that world fixed broadband subscribers grew by just 1.25% (13.9 million) in Q1 2020 to total 1.13 billion, but the main impact from COVID-19 won’t be understood until Q2 and Q3. Meanwhile almost every connection technology saw growth, except copper (ADSL etc.) lines that fell -10.3% year-on-year.

New crowd-sourced based research from benchmarking firm umlaut (formerly P3) has claimed that more than 90% of the UK’s active fixed broadband ISP lines deliver internet connection speeds that “meet the challenges of working from home,” at least with respect to the narrow scope of video conferencing apps.

The latest biannual UK Customer Satisfaction Index (July 2020) from the Institute of Customer Service, which reveals the top 50 organisations for customer service, finds that only three telecoms companies have made it into the top table – mobile operators Tesco Mobile, Sky Mobile and giffgaff.

The latest independent model has estimated that the H1 2020 coverage of “full fibre” (FTTP) broadband ISP networks across the UK has risen to 14.8% of premises (up from 11% in H2 2019), while 61.7% can get 100Mbps+ (up from 59.3%) and 22.1% are within reach of “gigabit” (1Gbps) speeds.

The release of a major new Season 4 patch for the popular Call of Duty: Modern Warfare (CoD) video game, which occurred on Tuesday (30th June 2020), pushed “broadband traffic” over Openreach’s (BT) national UK network to a new daily record of 189 PetaBytes consumed.

A recent analysis of the latest data from the Office of National Statistics (ONS), which was conducted by tax relief consultancy Catax, has revealed that business investment in the UK telecoms sector has held mostly steady, falling by only 0.6% in a year, as the Coronavirus crisis hit.

Vodafone has published a new report from WPI Economics, which perhaps predictably forecasts that the cumulative gains of UK businesses moving from 4G to 5G (mobile broadband) could produce an economic boost of more than £38bn by 2025, plus £120bn between 2025 to 2030 (total productivity-based boost of £158bn).

Once again we’ve taken our biannual look back to see how average download and upload speeds have changed across the fastest nationally available fixed line ISPs and mobile operators. Overall the COVID-19 crisis has produced a broad downward trend in H1 2020, but Virgin Media remains top for fixed lines and EE top for mobile.

A new survey of 1,000 UK video gamers, which was commissioned by full fibre broadband ISP Hyperoptic, has found that 44% of adult respondents named “the internet lagging” as the most infuriating aspect of online gaming, while 27% also complained about other players’ slow online speeds.

Broadband ISP TalkTalk UK has revealed that the release of the Season 3 update for online video game Fortnite on 17th June 2020, as well as the combined return of the Premier League (Football), sent internet traffic over their network to its “second highest peak … this year” of 6.12Tbps (Terabits per second).

Broadband ISP Virgin Media has today revealed new insights on the extent of internet traffic growth during the COVID-19 lockdown, such as the fact that households on their network have downloaded an “extra” 325GB (GigaBytes) on average during lockdown so far.

The European Commission has today published their annual 2020 Digital Economy and Society Index (DESI), which reveals how the UK’s fixed line broadband ISP and mobile networks compare with the rest of the EU. Overall the UK ranks just 20th for “Connectivity” (up from 21st in 2019), but we do better in other areas.

The Spanish information technology firm MedUX has published a short report examining the impact of the COVID-19 lockdown on UK broadband ISPs. Overall the report found that fixed networks handled the surge in domestic internet traffic “well” and services remained “reasonably stable,” but there were some weak points.

Opensignal, which specialises in crowd-sourced testing of 4G and 5G based mobile networks, has updated their study of the COVID-19 (Coronavirus) crisis to show how much of an impact it had on Smartphone users across the UK and the world. Suffice to say that mobile users spent a lot more time on WiFi via home broadband.
