Broadband ISP and mobile giant VMO2 (Virgin Media and O2) has published their Q3 2023 results, which sees their UK full fibre (FTTP) coverage via nexfibre expand to another 250,800 premises (up from 175.5k in Q2) and their fixed broadband base rise to 5,708,100 (up by 40.8k in Q3 vs -15.3k in Q2). VMO2 has also sold a 16.67% stake in Cornerstone for £360m.

Technical UK consultancy firm FarrPoint has today published their first Digital Connectivity Readiness Index (DCRI), which is designed to enable policymakers and digital leaders to identify where a region performs well and where challenges remain when it comes to mobile (4G, 5G), gigabit broadband, skills and other areas.

A new study from Broadband Genie (BG) has analysed 265,000 consumer speed tests and found the top slowest and fastest ten streets for broadband in the UK. For example, Morriston Close in Watford (London) comes out as the slowest street, with an average download speed of 0.6Mbps, but this is only half of the story.

Ofcom has published their latest quarterly (Q2 2023) study of UK consumer complaints, which shames Vodafone as attracting the most gripes about broadband ISPs, while TalkTalk, Shell Energy and Virgin Media tied the lowest ranking for landline phone, BT did the same for Mobile services, and Virgin Media and BT came bottom for TV.

A new Opinium survey of 500 UK adults who have moved house in the last 2 years (renters or owners), which was commissioned by Uswitch, has found that broadband is still “one of the biggest causes of frustration” when moving home – with movers being left offline for an average of 7.2 days.

The National Infrastructure Commission (NIC) has today published their second National Infrastructure Assessment (NIA) report, which is published every 5 years and highlights areas where the government still need to make improvements. But its recommendations for broadband and mobile are wafer thin.

Ofcom has today published the latest edition of their forecast for Planned Network Deployments, which predicts that the full fibre (FTTP) broadband ISP lines are on course to cover 91% (27 million premises) of all UK properties by May 2026 – rising to 94% for “gigabit-capable” networks (i.e. FTTP and Cable).

Crowdsourced mobile benchmarking firm Opensignal will today publish their annual 5G Global Mobile Network Experience Awards 2023 report, which examines the performance of 5G using mobile operators across the world and awards those that perform the best. But you won’t find any wins for EE (BT), Three UK (3), Vodafone UK or O2 UK (VMO2).

Network benchmarking firm Opensignal has published a new study of fixed broadband speeds across 28 European countries, which reveals that the United Kingdom performs poorly against its peers – placing mid-table for downloads and toward the bottom for uploads.

A new analysis of 265,572 consumer broadband ISP speed tests claims to have revealed the top fastest and slowest five areas, as well as five cities, across the United Kingdom. For example, the village of Halkirk in the Highlands of Scotland was named as the slowest area (2.8Mbps), while Canterbury came out as the slowest city (34.3Mbps).

A new study has analysed 5,603 mobile data (mobile broadband) plans from across 237 countries in order to compare the cost of a 1GB (GigaByte) data allowance, which reveals that the United Kingdom slightly improved its rank from 59th in 2022 to 58th in 2023, with an average price of USD $0.62 per GB (down from $0.79).

A new Atomik Research survey, which was commissioned by mobile network operator giffgaff, has claimed that 46% of its 2,000 UK respondents struggle with their attention span, which has led to accidental sign-ups to masses of emails (25%) and unwanted contracts (18%).

The UK Government (DSIT) has begun to consult on the potential introduction of a new Smart Data scheme – ‘Open Communications‘, which would require broadband ISPs and mobile operators to provide their customers (on request) with more data about their service (price, speeds, reliability, data usage etc.).

Internet benchmarking firm Ookla, which operates the popular broadband and mobile speed testing service – Speedtest.net, has published their latest Q2 2023 report into the UK internet download, upload and latency performance of SpaceX’s Starlink broadband satellite network. Overall, it’s a story of small improvements.

A new survey of 2,500 UK consumers, which was conducted by business and tax advisory firm EY, has claimed that, despite the cost-of-living crisis, only 12% of “digital households” have reduced or plan to reduce their spending on home broadband, mobile connectivity or streaming.
