Which?'s postcode based map of uk mobile signal quality 2025

Consumer magazine Which? has today teamed up with crowdsourced network benchmarking firm Opensignal to produce a new UK map of mobile network quality. The map uses real-world data to create a percentage score for how consistent the signal is in each postcode area in the year to August 2025 – split by EE, O2, Three UK and Vodafone.

People living, visiting and working along the North Norfolk (England) coast recently ran into an unusual problem with mobile roaming after their mobile phones began connecting to the ‘Maritime‘ network. The seamless change meant that locals ended up being hit with high roaming charges for calls and data usage, as they were no longer connected to a domestic network.

A new study by comparison site Go.Compare, which used data gathered from the ONS, internal data and a YouGov survey of 2,000 UK adults in May 2025, has claimed that over 77% of broadband users don’t switch ISPs as regularly as would be ideal to maximise their savings. Plus, of those users, 6% don’t switch more often because they forget to look for a better deal.

New research from Broadband Genie, which analysed the cost of 12-month and 24-month broadband deals from major UK providers during August 2025, claims to have found that 12-month broadband contracts “ideal for students” are on average 49% more expensive (costing £142.88 more a year) than two-year deals.

The Digital Poverty Alliance (DPA) has published a new briefing that warns how Social Tariffs from UK broadband and mobile providers, which offer significant cost savings to those on state benefits (e.g. Pension Credit, Universal Credit etc.), continue to suffer from three “critical flaws” – minimal awareness, inconsistent quality and affordability.

In news that will surprise none of ISPreview’s regular readers. Several major UK banks, such as NatWest and Lloyds, among others, have confirmed that they’re setting aside funding to cover loans that were issued to alternative fibre broadband networks (altnets) and which are now deemed unlikely to be repaid in full.

Internet provider Hey! Broadband, which offers services to homes in various areas covered by F&W Networks (Fibre and Wireless) alternative gigabit speed full fibre lines (mostly across the South East of England), have today announced that their customer based has surpassed 40,000 (up from 25,000 a year ago).

The LSBUD (Line Search Before You Dig) organisation, which provides an online asset search facility to UK civil engineering firms for underground pipes and cables, has published their Digging Up Britain 2025 report and revealed that telecoms (broadband, mobile etc.) remains the “most active industry” when it comes to searching before digging (37.5% of all searches). But this was down from 39% last year.

A new survey of 200 “senior telecom decision-makers” from the USA, UK, and Australia, which was conducted by network technology firm RtBrick, has claimed that broadband ISP and mobile operators are at risk of being “overwhelmed by the demands of AI and streaming bandwidth” in the next 5 years – around 80% of respondents expect it to “crush” today’s networks.

Mobile benchmarking firm RootMetrics (Ookla) has today published their H1 2025 study of UK mobile networks (calls, texts etc.) and 4G/5G mobile broadband speeds. The results once again name EE as the best mobile provider after they scooped up the highest scores and fastest data speeds across most categories.

The Technical Director for rural connectivity provider Wavemobile, Anthony Timson, has complained that the “biggest issue” they face today is the interaction devices roamed onto their network face with respect to the popular WiFi Calling service. Users who roam on to Wave’s network find that the big mobile operators (EE, O2, Vodafone and Three UK) seem to block it.

In a small but interesting update, the Government’s Building Digital UK (BDUK) agency has announced a string of new studies to evaluate the performance, delivery and value of its various mobile and broadband roll-out programmes – including Project Gigabit, Local Full Fibre Networks (LFFN), Shared Rural Network (SRN) and GigaHubs (extension of LFFN).

The UK Government (DSIT) has today moved to complement their recently introduced Digital Inclusion Action Plan (DIAP) by launching a new £9.5m Digital Inclusion Innovation Fund (DIIF). The fund is designed to support local authorities, charities and research organisations in helping to get people online who might otherwise struggle.

Ofcom have today published their latest quarterly (Q1 2025) study of UK consumer telecoms complaints, which names TalkTalk as attracting the most negative feedback from customers for fixed broadband, while O2 took the most heat for Mobile and Virgin Media were put on the naughty step for Pay TV services.

The latest Q2 2025 threat protection report from NordVPN, which is a familiar Virtual Private Network (VPN) provider, has revealed that the UK now ranks third in the world for the number of cyberattacks it attracts – having seen a surge of 103 million incidents (up by 7% in Q1) of malware being sent to Brits via emails and texts, malicious sites and infected attachments etc.

Broadband ISP Virgin Media (O2) has published some new insights from their fixed line network, which among other things reveals a fall in UK data traffic on Friday afternoons during the summer months, with as much as an 8% dip between 3-5pm compared to the winter, as “remote workers clock off early“.
