A senior researcher at the University College London‘s (UCL) Department of Geography, Oliver O’Brien, has taken data from Ofcom and used it to produce a new map of estimated broadband speeds across the country, which reveals some very familiar Digital Divides between different areas.

A BBC commissioned ComRes interview of 1,000 adults who are regular viewers of Premier League Football has revealed that 47% have used their broadband connections to stream live matches from pirated sources (e.g. unofficially modified Kodi boxes or “illegal” steaming sites).

A new survey of 2,000 British adults by Mortar, which was commissioned by UK ISP TalkTalk, has revealed that slow broadband comes top in a list of household bugbears for 2017 and as a result this is causing people to lose their cool as often as 138 times a year (aka “Load Rage“).

Ofcom’s latest Q1 2017 study of UK consumer complaints about fixed line Broadband, Phone, Pay TV and Mobile services has praised Sky (Sky Broadband) for receiving the fewest gripes. Meanwhile BT, TalkTalk and Vodafone are highlighted for attracting the most complaints.

Consumer magazine Which? has today published the results of a new survey that reveals the fastest and slowest local authorities across the United Kingdom by broadband download speed (median). The Orkney Islands (6.3Mbps) are by far the slowest and Tamworth is the fastest (30.4Mbps).

A new survey of 2,006 UK employees, which was conducted by Virgin Media, has found that 71% of home-workers view “fast, reliable broadband” as “very important” and the cable operator warns that the ASA’s on-going review of how line speeds are advertised fails to consider this group.

The first half of 2017 has seen another rise in average fixed line broadband download speeds to 28.21Mbps, albeit mostly fuelled by the on-going migration of consumers from older ADSL lines and on to newer “fibre broadband” (FTTC/P) services. Meanwhile EE is still king for Mobile Broadband.

The Confederation of British Industry (CBI) has today published a new report, which claims that faster and more reliable broadband and mobile connectivity are two of several key factors that could help to deliver a £25 billion boost to the Scottish economy by 2024.

A new report from the Wireless Broadband Alliance, which examined the levels of urban and rural connectivity across 8 major countries, has found that London is the most connected city (7% of citizens are unconnected) but 1.75bn citizens in the world’s richest countries (by GDP) remain unconnected.

Mobile operator EE has come out on top in a new RootMetrics study of YouTube’s video streaming via 4G and 3G mobile networks in London, which rated all four primary mobile operators by several criteria (e.g. video resolution, time taken to start a video, playback freezes / buffering etc.).

Cisco has published their 12th annual 2017 Visual Networking Index (VNI), which predicts that world Internet (IP) traffic will grow from 96EB (ExaBytes) a month in 2016 to 278EB in 2021. Elsewhere average fixed broadband speeds in the UK will double from 29.8Mbps in 2016 to 60.2Mbps by 2021.

The latest independent data for June 2017 has estimated that fixed line “superfast broadband” (24Mbps+) networks are now available to 93% of premises across the United Kingdom (96.1% if you include all “fibre based” lines, such as sub-24Mbps services), although some parts are lagging behind.

Telecoms giant BT has today published a new report that examines their environmental impact, which among other things reveals that their UK retail ISP division has refurbished 500,000+ HomeHub broadband routers over the past 18 months (these are used to replace any that customers return as faulty).

The latest ISPreview.co.uk poll of 1,384 website readers has found that the vast majority of respondents do know how to use their broadband router’s admin interface (92.5%), although 25.9% have never changed the default Wi-Fi password and 23.9% haven’t changed their router’s admin password.

Akamai‘s first quarter ‘State of the Internet‘ report has revealed that the global average fixed line broadband download speed is now 7.2Mbps (up 2.3% from 7Mbps in Q4 2016) vs 16.9Mbps in the United Kingdom (up 3.6% from 16.3Mbps). The UK’s country ranking has also risen from 16th to 15th.

Cable operator Liberty Global, which owns Virgin Media, has claimed that the “economic effects” of their investments in the UK (i.e. higher broadband speeds, improved productivity and price competition) between 2013 and 2017 have delivered a “total social benefit” worth £1.38bn.
