UK Ranks 36th in the World for 100Mbps Broadband Affordability

A new study has examined the affordability of unlimited “ultrafast broadband” (100Mbps) broadband packages from 233 of the markets biggest “fibre” ISPs across 62 countries. Overall the UK ranks a lowly 36th with consumers paying a monthly average of €39.78 for such plans, while in the Ukraine (cheapest) they pay just €5.60.

Top 10 UK Fastest and Slowest Streets for Broadband Speed 2019

A new report has used data from 122,845 consumer speedtests to identify both the top 10 fastest and slowest UK streets for broadband download speed, which claims that Kingsclere in Huntington (York) was the “slowest” on 0.22Mbps and Darwin St in Livingston (West Lothian) was the “fastest” at 182.52Mbps. Beware caveats.

Half of Small UK Businesses Say 5G Mobile is Overhyped

A new Consumer Intelligence survey of 1,068 UK SMEs, which was commissioned by broadband ISP Onecom and conducted between May and July 2019, has found that 51% of small and medium sized businesses feel the benefits of ultrafast 5G (mobile) technology are being overhyped.

ONS Finds UK Telecoms Industry is Fastest Growing R&D Spender

The UK Office for National Statistics (ONS) has revealed that the telecoms industry was the fastest growing sector for R&D spending in 2018, which saw related communications providers (ISP) and network builders increase their spending on research and development by 25.4% or £192m (total of £947m).

A new survey by broadband ISP Zen Internet has claimed that 9.1 million UK households don’t have access to WiFi throughout their homes and the provider believes that it’s the “responsibility of the broadband industry” to ensure this is delivered. As such they’ve launched their new EveryRoom guarantee (mesh network solution).

UK House Buyers Pay £5.3K in Property Prices for Every Megabit

A new survey by UK estate agent Springbok Properties has examined the broadband ISP speeds across every constituency and how house prices in these areas corresponded, which among other things has revealed that people in Liverpool Walton come out on top (average speed of 61.2Mbps and an average house price of just £75,000).

Vodafone UK Top Naughty List for Q2 2019 Broadband Gripes

The latest Q2 2019 consumer complaints report from Ofcom has confirmed that UK ISP Vodafone attracted the most moans for fixed line broadband, while Plusnet were the worst for landline phone and Virgin Media did the same for both Mobile and Pay TV. On the flip side Sky Broadband generated the fewest gripes.

ISP Onecom Claims Poor Broadband Costs UK SMEs £3,351 Each

A new survey of 208 small and medium sized UK enterprises, which was conducted during May 2019 by Consumer Intelligence on behalf of broadband ISP Onecom, has claimed that poor internet services cost them on average £3,351 each in lost business over the past 3 years (22% of SMEs estimate their losses at over £5,000 each).

450% Faster – Ookla Reveals UK 5G Mobile Broadband Speeds

New data from internet speed testing giant Ookla (Speedtest.net) has shown how well early 5G mobile networks – including EE (BT), Vodafone and O2 – are performing across England, Scotland, Wales and N.Ireland. Overall the new mobile broadband tech is more than 450% faster than older ones, albeit not as impressive for uploads.

TalkTalk Prep Imminent Launch of Openreach FTTP Broadband

The latest results (Q1 FY20) from TalkTalk have revealed that the UK ISP still hasn’t sealed a deal to sell FibreNation and its rollout of a new “full fibre” broadband network, although they did see strong take-up of their FTTC packages and confirmed plans to launch ultrafast FTTP via Openreach “before the end of the calendar year.“

GWS Benchmarks UK 5G Mobile Broadband Speeds in London

A new report from Global Wireless Solutions has benchmarked the 5G mobile performance of EE, Vodafone and O2 UK’s networks in London, which overall found that they were delivering download throughputs some 3-4x faster than 4G, although the latency times of 35-40ms weren’t much better than 4G and a far cry from the sub-10ms goal.

Gigabit Capable Full Fibre UK Broadband Cover Passes 10%

The latest independently modelled data has estimated that “full fibre” (FTTP) style broadband ISP networks – usually capable of “gigabit” (1000Mbps+) speeds – can now reach 10.01% of premises across the United Kingdom, which is up sharply from 5.47% at the very end of last year and from 8.13% at the end of June 2019.

Cable ISP Virgin Media UK (Liberty Global) has posted their latest Q3 2019 results, which reveals that their “gigabit capable” internet and TV network covered another 119,000 premises in the quarter (total of 1.9 million added since 2015) and their total broadband base now stands at 5,269,100 (up by +2.4K in Q3 vs +7.1K in Q2).

EE UK Spot Impact of 2019 Rugby World Cup in 4G Mobile Traffic

Mobile operator EE (BT) has revealed the impact that the 2019 Rugby World Cup tournament has had on their mobile broadband (mostly 4G) network traffic, which for example delivered a 20% surge in data usage during the England v New Zealand semi-final on 26th September. Games involving Wales also created an increase.

The Rural UK Better Broadband Subsidy Scheme is No More

The UK Government’s Better Broadband Subsidy Scheme, which offered grants worth up to £350 to rural homes and businesses that were unable to get at least a 2Mbps download speed (i.e. helping to get a faster ISP connection installed), will unsurprisingly NOT be extended for another year beyond 2019.

BT FTTP and G.fast Broadband Cover Tops 4.2 Million UK Premises

BT Group’s latest results to the end of September 2019 (Q2 19/20 financial) confirm that Openreach’s “ultrafast broadband” (100Mbps+) ISP network has increased its coverage to total 4.2 million premises (up from 3.7m last quarter), which includes 1.81m on FTTP (up from 1.51m) and 2.42m on hybrid fibre G.fast (up from 2.16m).

BDUK – Possible Build Scenario for UK Full Fibre Broadband Rollout

The Government’s (DCMS) Building Digital UK team recently proposed an interesting build scenario for the future £5bn – state aid funded – project to roll-out gigabit-capable “full fibre” (FTTP) broadband ISP networks, which as predicted suggests that the build phase probably won’t begin until late 2021.
