RootMetrics have today published their latest report into the Mobile Broadband (3G and 4G) performance of network operators EE, Three UK, O2 and Vodafone across 16 of the United Kingdom’s primary cities. Overall Liverpool came top of the table, while Hull is still stuck at the bottom.

Do you care about the upload performance of your broadband connection? A new online survey of 2,209 ISPreview.co.uk readers has found that nearly everybody knows how much Internet upload speed they have (up from 42% in 2014) and 65.4% claim to “NEED” an upload rate of 10-20Mbps+ from their ISP.

A new consumer survey of brand experience in the United Kingdom’s telecoms sector has found that Sky (Sky Broadband) and Virgin Media both ranked at or above the sector average (80+ out of 140), while TalkTalk and BT were found languishing at the bottom.

The non-profit Scottish Rural Action group has published a new report that points to “serious failings” in Scotland’s existing roll-out of “superfast broadband” services with BT and calls for 5 major policy changes, which they say would establish an “ultrafast” (300Mbps+) model for rural areas.

The spread of “ultra-fast” pure fibre optic broadband connections (FTTP/H) across the United Kingdom appears to have accelerated over the past year, with the latest estimate of premises passed delivering a total of 779,006 (up from 351,642 last year) and it’s set to reach around 4 million by 2020.

A new report from Audit Scotland, which works to ensure that public money in Scotland is spent correctly, has found that the £410m Digital Scotland roll-out programme with BT has achieved its initial coverage target. But delivering 95% “fibre broadband” coverage by December 2017 “will be more challenging.”

Apparently Leicester University might only be ranked 47th for higher education, but they come top for broadband speeds – averaging a download rate of 39.87Mbps in student areas – in a new study of Internet performance conducted on 43 of the United Kingdom’s top 50 universities.

Three UK has announced that indoor mobile coverage on their 4G (LTE) network has increased from 80% in June 2013 to 92% now, which is largely thanks to the boost from their on-going roll-out of the lower frequency 800MHz band. Elsewhere 42 new roaming destinations have also been added.

Virgin Media (Liberty Global) has today published their latest Q2 2016 (calendar) results, which found that the UK cable operator had added +42,700 new broadband subscribers in the quarter to total 4,808,000 (down from +70.4K added in Q1) and their on-going network expansion has reached another 85,000 premises.

The national telecoms regulator has released their 2016 Communications Market Report (CMR), which reveals the latest information about the take-up and usage of Broadband, Mobile, Phone, TV and Radio services across the United Kingdom (split by England, Scotland, Wales and N.Ireland).

BT has published a number of WiFi speedtests for their new Smart Hub broadband router, which pitted the kit against rival hardware from TalkTalk, Sky Broadband, Virgin Media, Plusnet and EE. The results appear to support the ISPs claim that their router “provides the most powerful wi-fi,” at least in comparison to the kit bundled by their rivals.

A new study has claimed that the Government’s defunct Connection Voucher scheme, which gifted grants worth up to £3,000 to help smaller UK businesses get a superfast broadband (30Mbps+) service installed, has boosted the economy in Greater London by £3bn and will help to create 32,824 new jobs.

Consumers are still frustrated by the way in which most broadband ISPs advertise their Internet service speeds. A new online survey of 1,267 ISPreview.co.uk readers has discovered that 80.8% think the way in which providers advertise their speeds is “misleading” and 89% want tougher rules to tackle it.

BT has published their latest quarterly results (calendar Q2 2016), which saw their total base of retail broadband customers top 9,117,000 (up by +76K in Q2 vs 1.045m in Q1) and 4,257,000 of those make use of their FTTC/P based Infinity superfast broadband service (up by +181K vs +214k in Q1).
