The Government has today published its latest Q4 2015 uptake figures for their state aid supported roll-out of superfast (24Mbps+) capable “fibre broadband” services across the United Kingdom, which shows that many local authorities are passing the key 20% threshold.

The latest Akamai State of the Internet Q4 2015 report has revealed that the UK’s average fixed line broadband download speed is now 13.9Mbps (up from 13Mbps in Q3 2015), which compares with a global average of 5.6Mbps (up from 5.1Mbps in Q3). But despite this improvement the UK’s country ranking has dropped from 14th to 17th.

Consumer magazine Which? has this week published the outcome from their latest reader survey of broadband ISP satisfaction, which saw Zen Internet and Utility Warehouse win the highest ratings. Unfortunately the same could not be said for TalkTalk, which had the lowest score by far.

A new report from IHS has said that Cityfibre’s Gigabit fibre optic (FTTP) broadband network will increase its coverage area from “15% of all UK households to 20%” by 2020, which will help to boost NGA Internet connections to 15.5 million. But the figures do require some clarification.

Fibre optic ISP Hyperoptic, which is rolling out a 1Gbps capable FTTP network to parts of 12 cities, has surveyed 3,000 UK residents and found that the average person spends 10.5 hours online a day (we assume that includes office work), while 24% also have “regular arguments” about poor broadband.

The European Commission has published their 2016 Digital Economy and Society Index (DESI), which sees the United Kingdom’s country ranking for mobile and fixed line broadband connectivity fall from 4th to 6th place; mostly because other countries are improving at a faster pace.

A new survey of 1,823 ISPreview.co.uk readers has discovered that 77% support the Government’s plan to introduce a new Universal Service Obligation, which could require BT and others to ensure that everybody can access a broadband speed of 10Mbps+ by 2020. But most want an even faster speed.

Somehow we managed to overlook last week’s Q4 2015 results from EE, which confirmed that they added +6,000 extra home broadband customers in the quarter to total 933,000 (lower than the +8k added in Q3) and expanded their 4G (LTE) Mobile Broadband network to 95% of the UK.

The Internet Service Providers Association (ISPA) has taken a look back at the number of times that “broadband” has been mentioned in Parliament since 2010 and discovered that there has been a 75% increase in references, which isn’t a surprise because that’s when Internet connectivity became a big issue.

The Government’s Broadband Deliver UK programme has today published its latest quarterly performance report to the end of 2015, which reveals a bit more detail about the project’s progress. Overall 3,625,369 extra premises have now benefited and can order superfast broadband, with £406,918,848 of BDUK funding spent.

The FTTH Council Europe, which campaigns for the adoption of ultrafast Gigabit (1000Mbps+) capable Fibre-to-the-Home broadband technology, has published its latest global ranking of FTTH/P/B progress and unsurprisingly the United Kingdom still doesn’t even make it to the list.

Cable Internet and TV provider Virgin Media (Liberty Global) has published their results for Q4 2015 and revealed that they added +69,100 broadband users in the quarter to make for a total of 4,694,900 (up from the +55,500 added in Q3 2015). The new 300Mbps service will also be extended to “Home Workers“.

According to the annual ‘Consumer Action Monitor’ report from Ombudsman Services, which is one of two Ofcom approved dispute resolution handlers for broadband and phone providers, some 16% (up from 15% in 2014) of all the 52 million consumer complaints made last year related to telecoms services.

Ofcom has today published their tenth annual Consumer Experience Report, which among other things helps to reveal the growing gap between what UK ISPs pay for their line rental and how much they charge their subscribers.

A new survey of over 800 businesses and farmers in the Anglia region of England (e.g. Norfolk) has found that 57% suffer from “poor” or “very poor” mobile phone signals and 31% can only receive a basic home broadband connection that delivers a download speed of less than 2Mbps.

Mobile operator Vodafone UK has today published their results to the end of last year (financial Q3 15/16), which saw their fixed line broadband customers increase by +14k to total 89,000 (up from +5k added in the previous quarter) and 4G cover reach 79% of the UK (86% using Ofcom’s definition) with 6.3 million subscribers.
