Several major UK broadband ISPs, including BT, EE, Plusnet, Sky Broadband, TalkTalk and Virgin Media (VMO2), have been ordered by London’s High Court to block six more streaming websites after they were found to be facilitating internet copyright infringement (piracy).

Budget broadband ISP TalkTalk has this week updated their list of blocked websites (i.e. those where they’ve been told to do so by the UK High Court) to include a number of new sites that, following an injunction secured by the Motion Picture Association (MPA), were found to be facilitating internet copyright infringement.

CityFibre UK and their local civil engineering partner, Granemore Group, have today announced a second expansion of their original £30m rollout in the Cambridgeshire city of Peterborough, which has already put their gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP network within reach of 60,000 premises.

Budget UK broadband ISP TalkTalk has today officially signed a contract with pay TV solutions provider Netgem, which will see the provider launch a new “TV 4K” product for their 4.2 million customers that will be powered by the Netgem TV platform and an apparently “frictionless ‘end to end’ operating model.”

Ofcom looks set to stoke anger among alternative UK network (AltNets) builders after the regulator today flatly rejected their concerns over Openreach’s “Equinox” offer, which will introduce a “major” price cut (details) to the incumbents wholesale Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband products for ISPs.

A number of reports today have claimed that TalkTalk will, effective from October 2021, partner up with Netgem TV to offer their UK home broadband customers access to a new set-top-box for premium TV (IPTV) services, but only those on their “ultrafast broadband” (e.g. FTTP) plans will be able to take it.

The UK Advertising Standards Authority has banned a TV and email advert for ISP TalkTalk’s home broadband packages, which occurred after they were found to have misleadingly pledged “no mid-contract rises” on supposedly “fixed” price plans, only to later increase their prices during the fixed contract period.

UK ISP Origin Broadband, which since August has been attempting to appoint an administrator to help tackle over £20m in losses (here), has today informed ISPreview.co.uk that all of their customer lines are being migrated on to TalkTalk’s platform (previously they used a mix of platforms), who are indirectly also Origin’s new owner.

Budget UK ISP TalkTalk and the Government’s Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) will today launch a scheme that enables job hunters across the country to apply for a new voucher scheme, which when redeemed will enable them to get 6 months of free broadband via the internet provider’s “Fibre” 35Mbps (FTTC) package.

Low cost UK internet and phone provider TalkTalk has this week become a company with “significant control” over alternative network operator Freedom Fibre (FF), which is currently building a new 10Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network to homes in semi-rural parts of Cheshire and Lancashire (England).

CityFibre, which currently aims to cover 8 million UK premises with their gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP network by around the end of 2025, has today secured another major investment boost of £1.125bn from the owner of Ikea (Interogo Holdings) and Mubadala (Abu Dhabi’s sovereign wealth fund).

Ookla, which runs Speedtest.net, has today revealed more data about 5G mobile speeds and availability across the UK. Overall, the country delivered average (median) 5G download speeds of 167.38Mbps (15.91Mbps upload), but availability is still low at 10.2% (17.9% on EE, 10.3% on Vodafone, 6.4% on Three UK and 5.4% on O2).

A new “nationally representative” survey of 4,478 broadband customers by Which? has claimed that consumers taking packages from the biggest four UK ISPs – Sky Broadband, BT, Virgin Media (VMO2) and TalkTalk – could save up to £143 per year by switching to a different provider. But price isn’t the only consideration.

Ofcom has published their annual study into UK fixed line home broadband ISP speeds, which reports that the average (median) download rate has risen from 50Mbps last year to just 50.4Mbps now (uploads are unchanged at 9.8Mbps). Meanwhile, the performance gap between urban and rural areas remains a problem.

Ofcom has today published their Q1 2021 (calendar) consumer complaints study, which names and shames Virgin Media UK for attracting the most moans about fixed line home broadband, Pay TV and landline phone services in the quarter, while Three UK did the same for Mobile.

UK ISP TalkTalk Business claims to have “significantly boosted the reach” of its Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband offering over the last year, with the number of premises across the UK able to implement the solution rising by 170% between July 2020 and July 2021. Over the same period, orders from customers surged by 50%.
