The UK telecoms regulator, Ofcom, has today acknowledge that their already much delayed new One Touch Switch (OTS) system for faster consumer broadband ISP migrations won’t be 100% ready for launch on 12th September 2024. But rather than delay it, again, they’ve instead ordered providers to retain the old system for a further 6 weeks.

Debt plagued UK ISP TalkTalk has this afternoon confirmed that they’ve formally signed a binding agreement on detailed terms of the refinancing package, which was announced on 12th August 2024 (here) and is said to be worth around £400m. This extends the group’s debt maturities to September 2027 and buys them more time to fix the roof.

Debt ridden UK broadband ISP TalkTalk have this morning confirmed that they’ve finally reached a £400 million deal with their lenders. The deal will buy the internet and network provider time to resolve their underlying financial woes by extending the group’s debt maturities to 2027 – avoiding an ugly default.

Benchmarking firm Opensignal has today published a complementary study to their recent research into the differences in broadband reliability across countries (here), which reveals the ISPs that deliver the strongest and poorest “broadband reliability experience” in the UK. Suffice to say that it’s a good day for Virgin Media and altnets.

Budget conscious broadband ISP TalkTalk has informed ISPreview that they’re preparing to follow Ofcom’s new guidance on inflation-linked annual broadband price rises. In practice, this means that new and re-contracting (upgrading) customers will be hit by a flat annual price increase of £3 (monthly) each April.

The telecoms regulator, Ofcom, has today given UK phone providers (fixed line and mobile) six months to implement changes that aim to help tackle scammers who call from abroad and imitate UK landline numbers (i.e. spoofed calls), which requires stricter measures against “Presentation Numbers” that are used to identify who is making a call.

The efforts to try and save broadband ISP TalkTalk from its rapidly suffocating debts took another twist today after a report claimed that shareholders, led by company founder Sir Charles Dunstone, are attempting to sweeten their offer to lenders by introducing an asset pledge – worth c.£200m – to support an already proposed capital injection of over £200m.

Ofcom has published their latest quarterly (Q1 2024) study of UK consumer complaints, which saw NOW Broadband (NOW TV) being labelled as the worst provider for attracting the most gripes about broadband and landline phone, while Virgin Media did the same for pay TV services and O2 were the worst for Mobile.

The Chief Financial Officer (CFO) of UK broadband ISP and network business TalkTalk, James Smith, has revealed that the debt-laden group’s existing shareholders have “confirmed their intent to provide new funding of over £200m” to support the company’s “working capital and operational costs“.

Network testing firm Global Wireless Solutions has today published the results of a new study that examined connectivity experiences in the UK, which saw Virgin Media (O2) win two awards for ‘Best Broadband Experience‘ and ‘Best Combined Connectivity Experience‘, while EE came top for ‘Best Mobile Experience‘.

Network benchmarking firm MedUX has today published the results of a new study, which examined the fixed broadband performance and quality of three major UK ISPs – BT, Sky Broadband and Vodafone. Overall, BT ended up topping the rankings, but it’s unclear why they left out TalkTalk and Virgin Media, both of which are bigger than Vodafone.

Today we’re taking our usual biannual look back to see how the average UK broadband download and upload speeds have changed across the fastest nationally available fixed line ISPs, mobile operators and Starlink (satellite) since the end of 2023. The founder of TalkTalk, Sir Charles Dunstone, and fellow shareholders are reportedly preparing to inject around £180m of new equity into the financially troubled UK internet provider. The move would help to tackle the threat of two large debt repayments, which are due over the coming months and said to total up to over £1bn.
