Virgin Media UK Update on Plan to Withdraw Upp’s Full Fibre

Customers of alternative UK full fibre broadband ISP Upp, which was last year acquired from investment firm LetterOne by network builder nexfibre (Virgin Media) for an undisclosed sum (here), have this week been notified that their service will be withdrawn “sometime” in 2024, when they’ll be switched to Virgin. But questions remain.

The CMO of full fibre operator CityFibre, Dan Ramsay, has today told the CEO of ISP Zen Internet, as part of a new interview, that they expect that the c.100 alternative broadband networks in the UK market today to eventually become one single operator. Ramsay separately denied that there had ever been talks of a merger with Virgin Media (VMO2).

MedUX Study Tests UK 5G Mobile Network Performance in London

Network testing and benchmarking firm MedUX has today published new research, which examines the performance and quality of 5G (mobile broadband) networks – including EE (BT), O2 (VMO2), Vodafone and Three UK – across London. The results indicate that EE is leading the pack in most areas, at least in the UK’s capital.

StreetWave Name Three UK Fastest for Mobile Data in Edinburgh

Mobile network analysts at Streetwave have published the results of a new real-world benchmark into mobile network performance across the city of Edinburgh in Scotland, which concluded that Three UK delivered the “fastest network” (mobile broadband) across most homes. But Vodafone had the fastest average upload speeds.

Jan 2024 Inflation Figures Reveal UK Broadband ISP Price Hikes

The Office for National Statistics has published their latest UK inflation figures, which saw the Consumer Price Index fall to 4% (down from 10.5% this time last year) and the Retail Price Index reach 5.2% (down from 13.4%). As a result, we now know how big the annual inflation-linked price hikes will be from most of the major UK ISPs.

Virgin Media’s FTTP Covers 12,000 Premises in Heysham and Lancaster

Broadband ISP Virgin Media UK (VMO2) and nexfibre have today announced that more than 12,000 extra homes and businesses – across both the large coastal village of Heysham and the small city of Lancaster in Lancashire (England) – can now access their new 10Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP / XGS-PON) network.

This will also create 300 new jobs over the next 2 years.

Survey Claims 2.7 Million UK People Unprepared for 3G Switch Off

A new Opinium survey of 2,000 UK adults, which was commissioned by Uswitch.com and conducted in late November 2023, has warned that 13% of mobile users still don’t know if their phone is 4G or 5G ready and 5% say they still use a 3G handset.

2023 H2 – UK Full Fibre Broadband Cover Reaches 60.5 Percent

The latest UK summary of fixed broadband coverage for H2 2023 has found that “full fibre” (FTTP) ISP networks have grown to reach 60.54% of premises (up from 52.77% in H1 2023) and 79.86% are within reach of “gigabit” speeds (up from 76.22%). In 2022 most consumers saw their prices rise by around 9% (here) and in 2023 that hit over 14% (here), but the predicted hikes for 2024 won’t be as bad.

Ofcom – UK Gigabit Broadband Rises to 78% as 5G Tops 85-93%

The latest Connection Nations 2023 UK digital infrastructure report has today been published by Ofcom, which finds that “gigabit-capable broadband” ISP networks now cover 78% of the UK (up from 70% in 2022), while outdoor 5G mobile cover from at least one operator is available to 85-93% of premises (up from 67-77%).

Virgin Media O2 Reveals UK Connectivity Trends for 2023

UK ISP and mobile operator Virgin Media and O2 (VMO2) have today published their annual round-up of customer connectivity habits for 2023, which among other things finds that broadband usage on their fixed line network increased by 13% in 2023 (up from 9% last year). Similarly, the mobile traffic and data increased by 26% in 2023 (down from 36% last year).

Major UK Home Phone Providers Commit to Protect Vulnerable Users

The UK government has this morning announced the signing of a new charter with major broadband ISPs and landline phone providers, including Sky Broadband, BT, Virgin Media (O2) and TalkTalk, which sets out “new measures” to protect vulnerable customers when upgrading phone lines to a new digital (IP / VoIP based) network.
