A website and YouTube advert for O2 UK’s custom plans (refresh campaign – the ability to upgrade your phone at any time) have been banned by the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) following complaints from rivals Three UK and Virgin Media, which said that some of their comparisons were “misleading.”

The UK Government’s Department for Digital, Culture, Media & Sport (DCMS) has today unveiled new legislation, which will effectively make it mandatory for property developers to ensure that almost every new home is built with support for “gigabit-speed” (1Gbps) broadband ISP connections “fit for the future.“

The bosses of several other UK broadband ISPs and organisations, including Gigaclear, Cityfibre and Openreach among others, have now gone into self-isolation at home for at least 7 days after meeting the CEO of BT Group, Philip Jansen, last week. Initially it was thought that this only effected the chiefs of major mobile operators.

A new study from Uswitch.com claims to have revealed the fastest and slowest stations and train lines on the London Underground for wireless broadband (WiFi) speed. The fastest station was found to be Edgware Road (49.7Mbps), while the slowest was Westminster (0.9Mbps).

As if yesterday’s broadband outage wasn’t bad enough. UK ISP Virgin Media is now facing their second embarrassment of the week after last night revealing that the personal details belonging to 900,000 of their customers had been exposed by an “incorrectly configured” marketing database. Oh and somebody unknown accessed it.

We’re receiving quite a few reports from Virgin Media’s UK cable broadband ISP and TV customers (including business clients – other ISPs will be impacted), specifically those resident along the south coast of England (Dorset, Hampshire etc.), which claim that a major service outage is occurring in that area.

Cable ISP Virgin Media UK has today announced that they’ve awarded a series of new regional build contracts for their gigabit-capable broadband and TV network to 6 national partners (worth £500m per year). On top of that they’ve also brought more than 700 customer-facing engineers back in-house to improve customer service.

The Leeds City Council in Yorkshire has today signed a new £20.3m partnership with BT (Openreach), which will see the latter build a new local “full fibre” network to connect hundreds of schools, NHS and other public sector sites across the city. A new fund will also be setup to support community broadband initiatives.

Cable and full fibre ISP Virgin Media (Liberty Global) has today announced that, effective from “early” March 2020, more than 1 million homes across Birmingham, Coventry and surrounding areas in the West Midlands (England) will gain access to their new 1104Mbps (52Mbps upload) – Gig1Fibre – broadband speed upgrade.

Comparison site Broadband Genie has today revealed the winners of their broadband speed awards, which covers different categories across standard, superfast and ultrafast connections. Overall Hyperoptic, a full fibre (FTTP/B) ISP that serves apartment blocks, was named the fastest ISP for both downloading and uploading.

The latest independent H2 2019 analysis of broadband coverage among UK new build homes has indicated that 83% of houses constructed last year were connected to a “full fibre” (FTTP) broadband ISP network (up from 73% in 2018), which rises to 96% for 30Mbps+ “superfast broadband” services (up from 95% last year).

A new paper from Plum Consulting, which was commissioned by Cityfibre, has assessed the viability of using both Hybrid Fibre Coax (HFC – Virgin Media) and Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) based networks to achieve the UK Government’s aim of bringing “gigabit-capable broadband” to every home by 2025.

Buying your own email address from a dedicated UK web hosting provider is cheap (c.£1-3 a month), unless you’re a former broadband ISP customer of BT (£7.50) or TalkTalk (£5) where in order to keep your address you can end up being charged significantly more for an often inferior product. Ofcom isn’t happy.

Cable broadband ISP Virgin Media recently confirmed that it intends to close 25 of its stores and kiosks across the United Kingdom, which will put around 110 jobs at risk. Once completed the move will leave around 53 stores and kiosks open across the country but staff fear that more may follow.
