Cable ISP Virgin Media UK has begun their New Year sale early by discounting the prices of their dual-play ultrafast broadband and phone packages back down to levels not seen since the Black Friday week. For example, the price of their top 350Mbps package is now just £37 per month for 12 months (£57 thereafter).

We’ve looked back at 2018 to see how the average download and upload speeds have changed across national fixed line broadband ISPs and mobile operators, although it’s no surprise to find that Virgin Media (fixed) and EE (mobile) are still front runners. But the picture changes when alternative “full fibre” ISPs are included.

Ofcom has today published their International Communications Market Report 2018 (ICMR), which broadly compares broadband and mobile networks in the United Kingdom with 17 other countries and the EU. Overall the UK does well for fixed line superfast broadband and 4G mobile, but we’re weak on “full fibre” (FTTP).

Ofcom has released their annual infrastructure report, which reveals that just 2% of the UK (677,000 premises) cannot access a 10Mbps capable fixed line broadband ISP service (down from 4% in 2017), while “full fibre” (FTTP) is available to 6% (up from 3%) and geographic coverage of 4G mobile has hit 66% (up from 43%).

Cable ISP Virgin Media has this morning discounted the prices of their standalone ultrafast broadband (no phone service required) packages for the first 12 months of service by -£10 (monthly) each. For example, the entry-level 54Mbps (average speed) package will be reduced from £35 to just £25.

Consumer magazine Which? has surveyed 3,000 of its UK members and concluded that broadband ISP customers who remain with their provider, and don’t haggle for a better price (i.e. after their minimum contract term has ended), are being hit with so-called “loyalty penalties” of up to £220 a year on average.

Internet speed analyst firm SamKnows has this week posted the results from a limited run of their new “sensationally accurate” broadband ISP speedtest tool, which was tested last month as part of support for some research that the BBC’s Watchdog TV show was doing. Unsurprisingly Virgin Media came top, with TalkTalk bottom.

Cable ISP Virgin Media UK has announced that their 362Mbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) based ultrafast broadband and TV network is being expanded to cover 11,000 additional homes and businesses around the large County Antrim town of Carrickfergus, Northern Ireland.

Cable ISP Virgin Media has launched a new flash sale on their ultrafast broadband and phone (dual-play) packages in the UK, which alongside the discounted rental prices also gives new customers the option of either receiving a £50 bill credit or a “free” case of Virgin Wines (valued at £117).

The President of the FTTH Council Europe, Ronan Kelly, has published a new open letter to EU telecoms ministers, which calls on them to stop “misleading fibre advertising” by UK and EU broadband ISPs that offer hybrid fibre services (e.g. FTTC); these are often significantly slower and less reliable than “full fibre” (FTTH).

Cable ISP Virgin Media will later this morning launch a series of new deals and discounts ahead of this week’s Black Friday event. In particularly their 108Mbps (average speed) broadband and phone package will see its price drop again to £25 a month for 12 months (£47 thereafter).

Cable ISP Virgin Media has teamed up with a development of new build houses in the Tees Valley area (Wynyard Park) and a graphic design firm (Shutter Media), which has enabled them to create a series of disguises that will be wrapped around 16 of their ultrafast broadband supplying street cabinets.

Billing mistakes can be costly. The national UK telecoms regulator has today fined mobile operator EE and cable broadband ISP Virgin Media a combined total of £13.3m for overcharging customers (those on discounted deals) who wished to leave their contracts early. Overall nearly 500,000 customers were affected.
