Broadband ISP Virgin Media (VMO2) has today switched-on gigabit broadband capability (1130Mbps downloads and 52Mbps up) for another 1.6 million UK homes, which means more than 90% of their entire network has now been upgraded to the DOCSIS 3.1 standard. The remaining 1.2 million should follow by the end of this year.

The CEO of Liberty Global, Michael Fries, has given an update on Virgin Media’s (VMO2) aspiration to launch a wholesale product for UK ISPs and their plan to upgrade existing Hybrid Fibre Coax (HFC) areas with XGS-PON based Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband. A trial of the latter is now taking place at 50,000 homes in 3 locations.

A number of our readers have been asking for an update on the progress being made by several major UK broadband ISPs, including TalkTalk, Vodafone, Plusnet and Virgin Media (VMO2), toward the deployment of the “new” IPv6 internet addressing standard. Sadly only one provider was able to give a rough launch date.

Virgin Media and O2 (VMO2) have today published their latest joint (merged) results for Q3 2021, which reveals that their full fibre (FTTP) network rollout reached another 67,000 UK premises in the quarter (down from 89K in Q2) and their total fixed broadband customer based hit 5,536,400 (up by +42.3K in Q3 vs +35.7K in Q2).

A new Digital Connectivity Index (DCI) has been published today, which measures how individuals and organisations can connect with one another and the rest of the world through good quality broadband access. Overall the United Kingdom ranks 8th out of the 24 counties of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development.

Ofcom has today approved an earlier proposal – requested by both Three UK and EE (BT) – to increase the permitted power output for the equipment that UK mobile operators use in the 800MHz band, which is expected to result in a small coverage improvement for the related 4G data (mobile broadband) and calling services.

A weekend report claims that Liberty Global has hired consultancy firm Accenture PLC to develop plans for the separation of their fixed broadband network assets from their retail ISP products, which is said to be supported by Virgin Media’s merger partner Telefonica (O2) in the United Kingdom.

Several major UK broadband ISPs, including BT, EE, Plusnet, Sky Broadband, TalkTalk and Virgin Media (VMO2), have been ordered by London’s High Court to block six more streaming websites after they were found to be facilitating internet copyright infringement (piracy).

But this time there’s no mention of a trial.

Broadband ISP Virgin Media UK (VMO2) has today followed yesterday’s information leak by officially unveiling their new Hub 5 router, which features faster wireless network speeds via Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax), improved security (e.g. WPA3 encryption) and a 2.5Gbps speed LAN (Ethernet) port. Best of all, for many, it’s a free upgrade.

Technology giant Samsung has today revealed that UK mobile operator O2 (VMO2) will shortly become one of the first providers in the country to conduct a commercial trial of their latest 5G Massive MIMO radios, as well as 4G radios, over both low-band and mid-band spectrum frequencies. The new kit will also be OpenRAN compliant.

Broadband ISP Virgin Media and mobile operator O2 UK, which merged into VMO2, will today launch a new range of “VOLT” products that aim to replace their existing “Oomph” bundles. In short, this means that customers will be able to buy Virgin Media and O2 products together, for the first time, and take advantage of new benefits.

Mobile benchmarking firm RootMetrics has today published the first H2 2021 results from their testing of 5G (mobile broadband) networks in the UK cities and towns of Coventry, Leeds and Bradford, Nottingham and Sheffield. EE delivered the fastest speed and availability in most of the locations, but not all.

UK ISP Virgin Media (VMO2) has confirmed that they’ve conducted a third trial of 2.2Gbps download speeds on their upgraded DOCSIS 3.1 network, which this time took place in the cities of Edinburgh and Birmingham. Previous trials took place in the town of Thatcham and parts of Southampton and Manchester (here and here).
