Councillors in the East Midlands (England) town of Northampton claim to be receiving “numerous complaints” from locals about the quality of Cityfibre’s street works, which reflect an investment of £40m to deploy a new 1Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP network for homes and businesses.

A new study from consulting and research firm Analysys Mason has estimated that the new generation of ultrafast 5G based (mobile broadband) networks, which are currently being deployed by Three UK, Vodafone, EE (BT) and O2, could deliver £14.8bn in economic growth to the UK between 2025-2040 (at a cost of c.£3bn).

Fibre optic developer Cityfibre UK has today announced they will invest £50m to cover “nearly every home and business” in North Tyneside (Tyne and Wear, England) with access to their new gigabit-capable and Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) based broadband ISP network.

Broadband ISP and mobile operator Vodafone UK have published their latest results to the end of September 2020 (financial Q2 FY21), which saw their fixed broadband base top 838,000 customers (up by +45k in the quarter vs +42K in the previous quarter), while their mobile base declined to 17,380,000 (down by -200k).

After almost 20 months of waiting it’s become increasingly disappointing to find that three of the UK home broadband ISPs that originally pledged their support to Ofcom’s new automatic compensation system for customers – Vodafone, Plusnet and EE – have yet to officially join the scheme.

Ofcom’s new Q2 2020 consumer complaints report is out today, which names UK ISP TalkTalk as attracting the most gripes for both home broadband and landline phone, while Three UK did the same for Pay Monthly Mobile services and Virgin Media came bottom for Pay TV.

The UK Government yesterday introduced new powers for the Secretary of State to, among other things, establish a new Universal Service Obligation (USO) for 4G or 5G mobile networks “in the future,” albeit only if that is “deemed necessary.” Questions will now be raised over what such a USO would look like.

Fibre optic developer Cityfibre UK has announced that they’ve begun work to rollout a new gigabit capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) based broadband ISP network in the coastal East Sussex town of Eastborne, which is being supported by a private investment of £26 million.

Cityfibre has today announced that they intend to invest £42 million in order to cover the large North Yorkshire (England) town of Middlesbrough with access to their new 1Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP network, which is being supported by civil engineering firm MAP Group (UK).

Contract-free UK mobile operator VOXI, which is a sibling of Vodafone, has today launched a new 5G based (mobile broadband) tariff that will give unlimited data, calls and texts for just £10 a month, for up to 6 months, to anyone who has lost their job as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic (equivalent to a 70% discount).

Cityfibre has today signed £1.5bn worth of civil engineering contracts (overall total of £2.5bn), which means they’ve now secured enough capacity to extend their 1Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) based broadband ISP network to 5 million UK premises, with all projects scheduled to be in build by summer 2021.

Mobile operators Three UK and Vodafone appear to be taking a leaf out of BT’s (including EE and Plusnet’s) book by becoming the latest telecoms operators to announce annual price hikes that will go beyond their usual RPI or CPI (inflation) linked increases. But with COVID-19 triggering another lockdown their timing couldn’t be worse.

Mobile operator Vodafone UK has taken the bold decision to upgrade 2,600 sites (e.g. masts supplying 4G and 5G services), mostly in rural Wales and South West England, by using kit supplied as part of the new Open Radio Access Network (OpenRAN). The sites are currently served by Huawei.

A new survey from Broadband Genie, which used a special tool to analyse and estimate the consumer stress levels of 305,568 tweets that were aimed at major UK broadband ISPs, has revealed which providers had the most stressed customers. Overall it’s bad news for Shell Energy, but good news for Hyperoptic.

RootMetrics has today published a new study of 5G based mobile broadband speeds and latency, which compares the network and coverage from EE (BT), Vodafone, Three UK and O2 in order to determine which operator is likely to deliver the best cloud gaming (remote play video games) performance in London.

Ofcom UK has set out new measures that will make switching between broadband ISPs on physically separate networks easier (e.g. Openreach to Cityfibre), but due to the complexities involved providers will be given until December 2022 implement it. Mobile operators will also be banned from selling “locked” handsets.
