Mobile operator and ISP Vodafone UK has reported that they added +44,000 new fixed line home broadband customers during the last quarter (Q2 FY19) to total 479,000, which is down from the +52,000 added in the previous quarter to June 2018. Meanwhile their mobile base shrank to 17,055,000 (quarterly fall of -377,000).

A new survey by consumer magazine Which? has named the best and worst rated 12 home broadband ISPs for customer satisfaction, which saw Zen Internet (86%) come top and Sky Broadband (47%) fall to the bottom. But the survey also warned that many people are paying over the odds by choosing to remain loyal.

Ofcom’s latest Q2 2018 UK complaints report finds that consumer moans are falling, while Sky Broadband attracted the least gripes for fixed line broadband (TalkTalk attracted the most) and it was the same story for landline phone services. Pay TV and Mobile providers are also included.

ISP Vodafone UK has today reduced the monthly price of their “superfast broadband” (FTTC) and phone line rental packages slightly by £1, which means that new subscribers can take their 35Mbps (average speed) service from £20 per month or £26 for 63Mbps (non-existing mobile customers pay slightly more).

A new survey of 7,026 broadband customers, which was conducted by consumer magazine Which? in July 2018, has examined 12 of the biggest UK home broadband ISPs and found that customers of Virgin Media were the most likely to experience problems with their service. Meanwhile subscribers to Zen Internet had the least moans.

Vodafone today claims to have become the “first to switch on” a full 5G service over a commercial network in Salford, Greater Manchester. This will be followed by roll-outs in Birmingham, Bristol, Cardiff, Glasgow, Liverpool and London by December 2018. Cornwall, the Lake District and Scottish Highlands will follow.

Mobile operator Three UK has been told to pull yet another advert for their service after Vodafone complained that one of their TV promotions, which told viewers that they could “use Snapchat all you like, without using up your data … only on Three“, was “misleading” because they offered a similar plan.

They’ve done it. Fibre optic network builder Cityfibre has announced that their backers have agreed to establish a £2.5bn fund, which will help the operator extend their 1Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH/P) broadband ISP network to cover 5 million premises in 37 UK cities and towns by 2025.

Vodafone has been named by crowd-sourced testing company OpenSignal as the best Mobile Network Operator in the United Kingdom for streaming video over a data (3G / 4G mobile broadband) connection, although they were very closely followed by arch rival EE (BT).

A new cross-party report has warned that there is “no silver bullet for how to improve rural mobile coverage” in the United Kingdom, but it has recommended five ways in which the Government could boost 4G network coverage enough to help achieve or beat the current target for 95% geographic coverage by 2022.

The Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) has banned a second Vodafone TV advert featuring actor Martin Freeman, which occurred after 11 complainants said the promotion “misleadingly” implied that Mobile customers could leave their contract at any time. Instead they could only do so within the first 30 days of service.

Cambridge, Leeds and Southend-on-Sea have today been named as the next 3 UK cities and towns to be covered via Cityfibre and Vodafone’s joint deployment of a new Gigabit capable Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH) broadband ISP network by the end of 2021. The rollout is being supported by an investment of £171m.

The national telecoms regulator, Ofcom, has today launched a new investigation that aims to establish whether or not EE and Vodafone provided “accurate information” in response to their requests for 3G and 4G mobile coverage predictions across the United Kingdom.

A recent update from OpenSignal, which uses crowd-sourced data to examine Mobile Network Operator (MNO) performance, has revealed that the United Kingdom ranks just 30th in the world for average mobile broadband download speed (19.01Mbps). By comparison South Korea came top (45.58Mbps) and India bottom (5.63Mbps).
