Cityfibre’s £10m investment to build a new 1Gbps Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH) broadband network in the city of Stirling (Scotland), which is being conducted alongside UK ISP Vodafone and began last November (here), has been criticised for a “lack of communication and lack of respect.” Traffic disruption is a big issue.

We’ve looked back at 2018 to see how the average download and upload speeds have changed across national fixed line broadband ISPs and mobile operators, although it’s no surprise to find that Virgin Media (fixed) and EE (mobile) are still front runners. The Christmas period seems to have encouraged UK ISP Vodafone to reduce their fixed line “superfast broadband” (FTTC) and phone prices to a rock bottom level, which means that new customers can take their 35Mbps (average speed) service from £20 a month or 63Mbps from £24 (non-Voda mobile users pay +£2 more).

A new report from Global Wireless Solutions has noted that mobile operators (O2, EE, Vodafone and Three UK) have “turbo boosted” their 4G coverage across major motorways in the UK since 2017, with the M6 seeing double what it had over a year and a half ago.

Mobile operators EE and Vodafone have come top in P3‘s annual 2018 UK Mobile Network Study, which used a range of different benchmarks to test 3G and 4G (voice and data / broadband) covering some 26% of the population in 22 cities, 35 towns and along 7,300 miles of major roads.

The UK telecoms regulator has moved to improve 4G and future 5G mobile coverage by setting out their plans for “spectrum sharing” in the 1800MHz, 2300MHz and 3.8-4.2GHz bands, as well as finalising new coverage obligations for next year’s auction of the 700MHz band. The 3.6GHz – 3.8GHz bands will also be auctioned.

Cityfibre has today confirmed that they’ve put in place a new debt financing package worth £1.12bn, which will support their wider £2.5bn roll-out (details) of a new 1Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP network to cover 5 million premises across 37 UK cities and towns by the end of 2024.

After years of delay and court battles Ofcom have today set the annual licence fees (ALF) that O2, Vodafone, Three UK (H3G) and EE will pay for their 2G, 3G and 4G Mobile services in the 900MHz and 1800MHz spectrum bands. The regulator has separately proposed fees for UK Broadband’s (H3G) holdings at 3.4GHz and 3.6GHz.

A few months ago the Government’s Digital Minister, Margot James MP, warned that some UK telecoms (mobile and broadband) operators were pushing land / building owners into accepting “derisory payments” for access to install their infrastructure (wayleave agreements). Today the situation is still far from resolved.

Ofcom has granted a small but controversial change to the part of the 3.6GHz band owned by mobile operator Three UK (H3G, UK Broadband Ltd.), which will give them access to a 100MHz block of contiguous spectrum that may result in faster 5G based mobile and fixed wireless networks. But BT, O2 and Vodafone aren’t happy.

After some disagreement Openreach (BT) and five major retail ISPs appear to have finally reached agreement on payments as part of Ofcom’s new automatic compensation system, which from “early 2019” will require them to compensate consumers for a total loss of fixed broadband and phone connectivity.

Most of the time when a mobile operator wants to improve their network coverage then they install new base stations or small cells in high locations, such as on top of a building, mast or street light. Now Vodafone has decided to go in the opposite direction by installing small antennas “below street level.”

The CEO of Vodafone Group, Nick Read, has told a meeting of investors that, at the wholesale fibre broadband ISP level, they’re “not engaging” with Openreach (BT) any more “in terms of any further opportunity,” which puts pay to earlier predictions of a new co-funded FTTP build. But they would talk to Comcast (Sky).
