Vodafone has today announced that they’ve become the first mobile operator in the UK to launch a package for customers based off their new 5G Standalone (SA) technology – called ‘5G Ultra‘, which promises faster mobile broadband speeds and better performance in other areas. But there are a few caveats too.

Mobile network operators Vodafone and Three UK (CK Hutchison) have today confirmed that they’ve reached a formal merger agreement, which is said to be worth an estimated £15bn and will see the former party owning a 51% slice of the business (CKH will hold 49%). But they’ll still have to satisfy the regulators, and that may require concessions.

Cheeky mobile operator O2 (Virgin Media) recently hired a team of “independent secret shoppers” to visit EE (BT), Vodafone and Three UK stores to see what contracts were available to them, which found that split contracts (i.e. separate contracts for the handset and airtime) are “harder to get hold of than some networks have customers believe.”

Global Wireless Solutions has today published the results of a confusing new study that measured the network performance of operators that have combined their mobile and broadband ISP businesses. Overall, the study found that the fastest download speeds by a combined provider were seen by Virgin Media O2 (138Mbps average).

In recent weeks the news has been full of reports (e.g. here and here), which frequently warn – without challenge – that the move by Mobile Network Operators (MNO) O2, Three UK, Vodafone and EE to withdraw old 3G services will push “millions of people” into “digital poverty” and disconnect them from the internet. But are they correct?

Broadband ISP and mobile operator Vodafone has announced that they’ve expanded their existing partnership with Currys, which until now was exclusively focused on Mobile, to also include the provider’s range of Home Broadband products for consumers.

A new benchmark study from telecoms analyst firm Umlaut, which tested and measured fixed broadband connectivity in the United Kingdom over a period of 6 months, has awarded their overall “Best in Test” certificate to Virgin Media (VMO2) after they came top for both download and upload performance.

Ofcom has today published their 2023 UK study of broadband ISP, phone and mobile service quality, call waiting times, complaint levels, faults, repairs, compensation and install times amongst the largest providers. For example, TalkTalk attracted the lowest satisfaction for broadband (78%), while Plusnet secured the highest (89%).

Vodafone UK has released their latest Q4 FY23 results, which reveals that their fixed line broadband ISP base grew strongly to total 1.223 million customers (up by 65k in the quarter vs 47k in Q3 FY23), while their mobile base also now totals 17.92 million (up by 118k vs 259k in the previous quarter). But job cuts galore.

The CEO of mobile and broadband ISP Vodafone UK, Ahmed Essam, has joined other retail internet providers in publicly calling on Ofcom to approve Openreach’s proposed “Equinox 2” discount scheme for their Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) based products, which is being challenged by alternative networks (AltNets).

Ofcom has today published a new analysis of the impact their “Text-to-Switch” (Auto-Switching) system for UK mobile operators (e.g. EE, Vodafone, O2 and Three UK), which was introduced in June 2019, had on consumers. Overall, the new system has fuelled a strong increase in consumers switching mobile operators.

At the start of this year Vodafone became the first UK mobile operator to begin the process of switching off their old 3G mobile (mobile broadband) network, which started with a pilot in the Devon city of Plymouth and the Hampshire town of Basingstoke. The operator now plans to start switching off the remainder of its 3G from June 2023.

Mobile operator Vodafone and TV broadcaster ITN have today announced that the Coronation of King Charles III will be the first UK broadcast to be enabled by a public 5G Standalone (SA) network, which will harness a specific “network slice” on the operator’s trial network.

The first UK government-funded rural 4G mobile mast upgrade has today been completed in the Lockerbie area in Scotland, which forms part (£75m) of their industry-led £1bn Shared Rural Network (SRN) project with EE (BT), Vodafone, Three UK and O2 (Virgin Media). A further 120+ masts in Scotland are also set for upgrades.

Mobile network analysts at Streetwave have published the results of a new survey, which examined the mobile signal quality on the London (England) to Edinburgh (Scotland) train route. Perhaps unsurprisingly, the route was found to suffer from various “not-spots“, while EE’s network performed the best for mobile broadband.

The latest data from Ookla, which runs the popular Speedtest.net service, has revealed that mobile network operator (MNO) Three UK is still beating rivals at Vodafone, O2 (VMO2) and EE (BT) for average median 5G broadband download speeds – scoring 275.85Mbps (Megabits / sec) in Q1 2023. Roughly double their nearest rival.

UK-based global mobile operator Vodafone has today confirmed that their Interim Group CEO, Margherita Della Valle, has just been appointed as their permanent group CEO. She will also continue on as Group Chief Financial Officer until an external search for a new CFO is complete.
