The UK Government has today revealed that 1,084 schools in rural areas have now been connected to a gigabit-capable “full fibre” network as a result of the investment they started in 2019, which is continuing under their new £5bn Project Gigabit scheme. A further 884 schools are planned to be connected by March 2022.

After a delay that was caused by a data backlog regarding previous voucher schemes, the Government’s (DCMS) Building Digital UK team have confirmed that they are now actively onboarding local councils that are interested in setting up a top-up boost for their £210m rural gigabit broadband voucher scheme.

Broadway Partners (ISP Broadway Broadband) has today secured a huge investment of £145m from Downing LLP to fuel their rollout of a new gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network, which aspires to cover 250,000 homes and businesses by 2025 – mostly across rural parts of Scotland and Wales.

UK ISP Beacons Telecom, which last year started to build their own gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network across rural and urban parts of Powys and Monmouthshire in Wales (here), have made impressive progress for a smaller provider and are now approaching 7,000 premises passed.

Mobile operator O2 (VMO2) has today confirmed to ISPreview.co.uk that they’ve started to deploy the newly released 700MHz spectrum band for use on their latest ultrafast 5G mobile (mobile broadband) network, albeit initially limited to areas where they perceive there to be a case of “customer need” for it.

Broadband ISP and TV provider Virgin Media UK (VMO2) has today announced that 20,000 premises in Wrexham (North Wales) can now gain access to their gigabit-capable network, with further expansion planned for 2022. The operator has so far invested some £12m into the local rollout.

Ofcom looks set to stoke anger among alternative UK network (AltNets) builders after the regulator today flatly rejected their concerns over Openreach’s “Equinox” offer, which will introduce a “major” price cut (details) to the incumbents wholesale Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband products for ISPs.

Wireless and full fibre UK ISP Voneus, which is backed by Macquarie Capital, has continued to expand its operations in South Wales by acquiring IRG Computers, which is the company behind ResQNet – a wireless internet provider that serves rural areas across parts of Carmarthenshire, Ceredigion, Pembrokeshire and the Swansea Valleys.

The city of Newport in South Wales has become the latest area to be targeted by Grain‘s UK rollout of a new gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network. Some of the first streets to benefit in phase one include those around Caerleon Road and Durham Road (e.g. Constance Street, Orchard Street and Stockton Road).

The Welsh Government has issued a Q2 2021 progress update on their £52.5m Phase 2 Superfast Cymru contract with BT (Openreach), which reveals that 20,490 premises (up from 19,919 in Q1 2021 and 15,649 in Q4 2020) have now gained access to the operator’s 1Gbps Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network.

Fixed wireless and full fibre UK broadband ISP Voneus, which is backed by Macquarie Capital and holds a “near term” target to connect 100,000 rural homes to their Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network (here), is expanding its operations in South Wales as their rollout ramps-up.

Ofcom’s latest Summer 2021 report into UK broadband and mobile coverage has revealed that “full fibre” (FTTP) coverage is now at 24% (up from 21% in Jan 2021) and 11.6 million homes (40%) are within reach of a gigabit-capable network (up from 37%). Meanwhile, 4G mobile coverage remains stable and there’s still no data on 5G.

The UK Government has announced that their project to create a National Underground Asset Register (NUAR), which reflects a digital map of underground pipes (water etc.) and cables (fibre optic broadband, power etc.), is entering the “Build Phase” and could help to cut some of the £2.4bn (per year) cost of accidental utility damage.

Customers of Sky Broadband (Comcast), particularly those in the South East of England and Wales, were hit by a significant broadband and phone (VoIP) outage last night that appeared to last for several hours. The bad news is that Sky appears to be suffering from yet more service disruption this morning and in the same area.

The Welsh Government has today launched a new Open Market Review (OMR) for Wales, which aims to identify any existing or planned commercial coverage of gigabit broadband ISP networks. The review will help to establish the areas where public investment may be needed to deploy the service.

UK ISP Ogi (Spectrum Internet), which is currently investing £200m (here) to rollout a Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network to 150,000 premises in South Wales by 2025 (first phase), has today officially chosen Nokia to be their key technology partner (strategic supplier) for network kit etc.

UK ISP Ogi (Spectrum Internet), which is being backed by investment from Infracapital, has today announced that they’ve grown to employ 100 people. The new staff will help to support the first phase of their £200m project (here) to rollout a Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network to 150,000 premises in South Wales by 2025.
