BT Issues Report on Progress Against the UK Broadband USO

UK ISP BT has just issued their first biannual report on the progress they’ve made toward delivering the 10Mbps Universal Service Obligation (USO) for broadband, which highlights some of the known challenges. Overall they’ve so far handled 9,000 applications and 512 confirmed orders, resulting in a USO build for 4,000+ homes.

Ofcom has this morning opened an investigation to examine whether or not BT is complying with their obligations under the new UK Universal Service Obligation (USO), which requires them to help deliver at least a 10Mbps broadband download speed, upon request, to those in poorly served areas.

150,000 Premises in Wales to Get FTTP Broadband Under New Deal

Cardiff-based UK ISP Spectrum Internet, which earlier this year revealed that they hoped to build a new 1Gbps Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network to 150,000 homes and businesses across South Wales (here), has today announced that they’ve secured enough investment from Infracapital to get started.

The Welsh Government has issued a progress update on their £52.5m Phase 2 Superfast Cymru contract with BT (Openreach), which is deploying a gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP network to cover a further 39,000 premises. The data to June 2020 shows that 9,895 have so far been completed.

Wireless ISP Bluewave Faces Criticism for Poor Connectivity

Wireless broadband ISP Bluewave, which serves rural premises across parts of Carmarthenshire and Pembrokeshire (Wales) with claimed speeds of “up to” 40Mbps for £29.99 per month, has been criticised by some of its customers for taking publicly funded vouchers and then failing to deliver a good or working service.

Gov Hails £22m Top-up for UK Rural Gigabit Broadband Vouchers

The UK Government has today announced that their Rural Gigabit Voucher scheme has been given a £22.2m top-up boost by a total of 17 local councils in England, which has increased the size of their vouchers and meant that more homes and businesses can now potentially get a 1Gbps capable broadband ISP network installed.

Ofcom – Full Fibre Broadband Grows to Cover 14% of the UK

Ofcom has today released their Summer 2020 update for UK broadband and mobile networks, which reveals that “full fibre” (FTTP) coverage has grown to 14% or 4.2 million premises (up from 12% in Jan 2020) and 2% (590,000 premises) are still unable to get speeds of 10Mbps+. Geographic 4G coverage is now 67% (unchanged).

Cardiff Gets £500,000 Full Fibre Boost from Welsh Government

ISP Wildanet Claims Liskeard is First in Cornwall for Gigabit Speeds

Fixed wireless broadband ISP Wildanet has extended their network to the market town of Liskeard and claimed that it is now Cornwall’s (England) first location to benefit from the “fastest level of broadband speeds available” at 1Gbps, except its not and the fastest consumer package on their site is only 50Mbps.

Carmarthenshire-based ISP Dyfed Superfast (Dyfed IT), which supplies wireless broadband services to premises across rural parts of Wales, has acquired rival network Pembs WiFi for an undisclosed sum and aims to extend gigabit broadband coverage.
