The latest research from Point Topic has revealed that world fixed broadband lines grew by 1.6% (22.39 million) in Q3 2023 to total 1.42 billion connections, which compares with 1.87% (24.59m) in the same quarter last year. But the subscriber growth rate of “full fibre” (FTTP/B) networks in the UK almost stalled in the latest quarter.

Broadband ISP and network builder Airband, which originally aimed to cover 600,000 UK premises in rural areas via a mix of their wireless (FWA) and full fibre (FTTP) networks by the end of 2025, has revealed that it’s going through a “period of restructuring” after claims of redundancies and build pauses surfaced.

The UK communications regulator, Ofcom, has today published an interesting new white paper that, in collaboration with Queen Mary University of London, explores whether “reflective surfaces” could be used to cost-effectively extend the coverage of wireless broadband and mobile networks. But more research is required.

The Wi-Fi Alliance has today official begun certification for the next generation of Wi-Fi 7 (802.11be) capable wireless networking devices. The new Wi-Fi 7 standard is expected to “see rapid adoption“, with more than 233 million devices predicted to enter the market in 2024 alone. Just don’t expect to see those dizzy speed claims of 46Gbps in the real-world.

The Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, has launched a new consultation to investigate the possibility of launching a free city-wide public WiFi broadband network that would be open-access for everybody to use. The suggestion being that users wouldn’t need to go through the usual sign-up / login processes and could simply connect.

The ITU’s World Radiocommunication Conference 2023 came to an end last week and one of its key decisions was to announce that the Upper 6GHz radio spectrum band (6425 to 7125MHz) can be used for mobile (5G and 6G), but also allows regulators like Ofcom in the UK to exploring a hybrid approach alongside WiFi.

A complaint by Vodafone has prompted the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) to investigate and ultimately ban a series of adverts for Virgin Media’s (VMO2) UK broadband ISP products after some of them “misleadingly” claimed to be offering the “fastest WiFi Guarantee of any major provider“.
