Ofcom UK Opens Review of Fixed Wireless Network Links

The UK telecoms regulator, Ofcom, has today begun a review of the use and demand for fixed wireless links and related spectrum implications. Such links can be used for all sorts of things, such as delivering broadband to homes, feeding backhaul data capacity for mobile networks in remote areas and TV broadcasts etc.

Network operator IX Wireless, which is building a new UK fibre-fed fixed wireless broadband network – supported by ISP 6Gi (not related to 6G mobile technology), appears close to expanding their existing roll-out into Tameside (Greater Manchester) after it applied to Oldham council for 29 poles to be installed, each 15 metres high.

Ofcom Summer 2023 Study – Full Fibre Broadband Covers 52% of UK

Ofcom’s summer 2023 study of UK fixed broadband and mobile coverage has reported that “full fibre” (FTTP) now reaches 52% of the UK (up from 48% in Jan 2023), while 75% are within reach of a gigabit-capable network (up from 73%) and 76-85% of premises can get an outdoor 5G signal from at least one operator (up from 73-82%).
