A new report has claimed that telecoms infrastructure providers in the UK’s mobile network sector are using “new tactics” to secure more favourable lease renewals on mast sites. The tactic is said to be enticing landowners to negotiate without professional representation (i.e. risking agreements that reduce rents or overlook key protections).

Network operator Axians UK, which forms part of the €22 billion Vinci Energies group, has just announced the acquisition of Novo Technologies, a Scottish-based provider of end-to-end telecoms infrastructure solutions for both Carriers and Enterprise clients. The deal is being hailed as one that could help to build the nations “5G backbone“.

The UK telecoms regulator, Ofcom, has this morning launched an additional technical consultation to support their recent decision to allow low power indoor WiFi signals and outdoor mobile broadband (4G, 5G etc.) networks to “share” access to the Upper 6GHz radio spectrum band (6425 to 7125MHz). The key focus this time is on how they’ll define “high density areas” for mobile licences.

Kent-based UK ISP Orbital Net (Orbital Internet Group), which operates the Vfast sub-brand that sells broadband packages to consumers via a mix of fixed wireless (FWA) and full fibre (FTTP) networks, has today announced that they’ve acquired a key provider of connectivity solutions to the UK holiday park sector – Leisure Park Internet Solutions Limited (LPIS).

A new Censuswide survey conducted on behalf of broadband ISP Zen Internet, which involved 2,000 nationally representative UK consumers aged 16+, claims to have found that respondents are increasingly putting Wi-Fi (internet connectivity) above everyday essentials. For example, 36% say they would go without hot water rather than lose the internet.

Network provider Openreach (BT) has launched a new high speed Optical Spectrum Access (OSA) product called OSA Mobile. The new fibre optic data capacity link is designed to connect UK street furniture (lampposts, street cabinets, etc.) to support the rollout of 4G / 5G Small Cells and front haul applications for mobile operators, as well as public WiFi hotspots, CCTV and broadcast applications etc.

British Airways has revealed that it’s just become the first airline in the UK to launch the fastest onboard Wi-Fi in the sky, which occurred after their first Starlink equipped flight took to the skies at the end of last week. The flight marks the first of many to harness Elon Musk’s massive constellation of broadband satellites in Low Earth Orbit (LEO).

Several UK-based and European technology companies, including Excelerate Technology, Eutelsat (OneWeb) and Livewire Digital, have today launched a new solution called NOMADLINK, which is a trailer pulled unit that can be used to deliver emergency broadband and voice connectivity to major incidents, large public events, and rural or isolated communities across the UK.

A new report from The YIMBY Initiative (TYI), which describes itself as a cross-party UK research led think-tank, has today argued that “small changes” to existing legislation and frameworks could reform the planning system just enough to help boost the deployment and coverage of 5G based mobile broadband networks.

Networking technology giant Nokia has today set out its “early vision” for the next.. next generation of Wi-Fi 9 wireless networking standards. This is despite the fact that work is still ongoing to develop the final standard for the future Wi-Fi 8 (802.11bn – Ultra High Reliability) standard (here and here), which isn’t expected to be finalised until May 2028.

The Independent Networks Co-operative Association (INCA) and Point Topic have today released their 2026 report into the impact of alternative “full fibre” (FTTP/B) broadband networks in the UK. The study reveals that their coverage grew by 20% in 2025 to top 19.7 million premises (up from 16.4m or 27% in 2024) and there are more than 3.5 million live connections (up by 32%).

A relatively new telecoms company called Boom Telecom Networks has revealed that it’s planning to build and operate a UK broadband network, which would be a Fibre-to-the-Premise (FTTP) and Gigabit Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) hybrid, although the details are currently quite limited.
