UK Train Operator Greater Anglia to Launch Free WiFi at 100 Stations

The Greater Anglia train operator has announced that it’s working with WiFi Hotspot operator The Cloud (BSkyB) to introduce a free wireless internet service at 100 of its stations across the region (e.g. Cambridge, Norwich and Stansted Airport).

Ofcom Details UK Framework to Support White Space Wireless Broadband

Ofcom UK has today proposed a new framework to support the future use of White Space (IEEE 802.22) based wireless broadband technology on a licence exempt basis. The new service harnesses unused radio spectrum, which exists between Digital TV channels (470MHz to 790MHz), to deliver wifi style connectivity over a wide area.

ITSwisp Brings 8Mbps Wireless Broadband to Rural Norfolk and Suffolk

A wireless broadband ISP called ITSwisp, which appears to be an off-shoot of another local provider ThinkingWISP, has launched to deliver internet download speeds of up to 8Mbps (Megabits per second) to “serve large areas around” rural Norfolk and Suffolk in England (UK).

Ofcom has today begun to set out plans that will eventually enable the release of new airwaves (UHF radio spectrum), such as the controversial 700MHz and 600MHz band used by Digital TV services, which could be used by a future generation of 5G Mobile Broadband or WiFi style internet solutions. But it will be 2018 before anything happens.
