Cable operator Virgin Media has today revealed a list of 82 London Underground Tube Stations that will receive an upgrade to its free public wireless internet access (WiFi) service before the end of July. A further 38 (total 120), including “deep-level” stations, will be added by the end of 2012

BT has today confirmed that it’s still on-track to offer 500,000 wireless internet access hotspots across London in time for the 2012 Olympic Games, which will be mostly delivered via their FON wifi community of retail broadband ISP subscribers. The telecoms operator claims that 475,000 hotspots are already live in Greater London.

Business ISP Metronet UK has today announced the expansion of its hybrid superfast fibre optic (FTTx) and wireless broadband network to reach firms in the market town of Macclesfield (Cheshire East / Cheshire) and surrounding areas, where local businesses have allegedly been unhappy with BT’s existing FTTC service.

The Cloud (BSkyB), a public wifi hotspot operator, has announced that the visitors and guests of 2,400 UK pubs, restaurants, hotels and venues owned by the Greene King group will soon be able to access a free wireless internet service (with no time constraints).

Residents living in the small North Yorkshire (England) fishing village of Robin Hood’s Bay can now access broadband internet download speeds of around 10-12Mbps (Megabits per second). This is thanks to the launch of a community wifi network (The Bay Broadband Co-operative) that has been upgraded with help from NYnet and Defra’s Rural Development Programme (RDPE).

A group of Japanese scientists working out of the Tokyo Institute of Technology (TIT) have managed to push wireless (wifi) data rates of between 2-3Gbps (Gigabits per second) over the unregulated T-rays band of the electromagnetic radio spectrum (300-3000GHz).

Communications provider Spectrum Interactive has announced that they are opening up their wifi hotspots in London (England, UK) to offer free internet access, albeit with a small catch. Users will only be granted access to FREE Street Wi-Fi if they first select a free promotional offer from one of the service partners.

The small coastal hamlet of Shingle Street in Suffolk (England), which is home to a total of just 25 houses, has been delivered into the modern digital age after a local campaign (Wilford Bridge Broadband Project) succeeded in getting Buzcom to deploy its superfast wireless (wifi) broadband service (FibreWiFi) across the area.

Public UK WiFi Hotspot operator The Cloud, a BSkyB company, has installed a new “high-speed” public wireless internet service at the Broadgate office block in London’s Square Mile. The service is expected to benefit thousands of people who visit and work in the area, although only the first 60 minutes per day will be free.

Cheshire-based Internet provider Vispa has confirmed that their superfast wireless broadband service (wifi), which recently delivered speeds of up to 100Mbps into parts of Manchester (here), will soon be available to order in two large civil parish villages of Burtonwood and Winwick (Warrington, England).

Wales focused ISP Exwavia, which uses wireless networking (wifi) to deploy faster broadband into isolated rural areas, has announced that it plans to turn Montgomeryshire into the “fastest rural broadband region in the UK“. At the same time their related service coverage in the Cefn Coch and Adfa areas (near Welshpool, Powys) has also been extended to connect 80 properties.

New Strategy Analytics research has revealed that the UK and South Korea dominate the world for home wi-fi network penetration. Some 80.3% of households in SK have wifi networks, which falls to 73.3% for the UK. Overall 25% (439 Million) of households worldwide now have a home wifi network and adoption continues to climb.

Analyst firm comScore has revealed that 13% of iOS (Apple iPhone) and 43% of Android based Smartphone owners in the UK use only Mobile Broadband connectivity to go online, which rises to 87% and 57% respectively when both mobile and WiFi connectivity are used. Interestingly Three UK is the most popular network for mobile-only (3G) internet access, while Vodafone comes top when mobile and WiFi use is combined.

Sky Broadband (BSkyB) has today confirmed the much anticipated mid-April 2012 launch of its free wireless internet (wifi) service, which will be available to the ISPs existing SkyBroadband Unlimited, Sky Fibre Unlimited (due to launch next week) and Sky Connect customers from over 10,000 Hotspots across the UK.
