Mobile network operator and home broadband ISP EE (BT) is reportedly preparing to launch a second Wi-Fi 7 powered router “later this year“, which is intended to complement their existing Smart Hub Pro router (inc. Smart WiFi Pro mesh kit) that is sold alongside their fastest 1.6Gbps FTTP packages on Openreach’s network.

A new survey of 500 national landowners, which was conducted by telecoms investor AP Wireless UK – a company with a strong vested interest in this area, has claimed that 35% of respondents are considering terminating their mobile mast agreements, citing concerns over rent cuts, legal pressure and loss of trust in mobile network operators.

The North Yorkshire Council (NYC) in England has proposed to wind-up the NYNet 100 company, which was originally created to help carry out procurement and contract management for the local authority’s Superfast North Yorkshire (SFNY) project. This has helped 201,000 premises in the rural county to access faster broadband over the last 15 years.

A new study from Guest Metrics, which has a vested interest in selling content filtering solutions, claims to have identified “widespread failures in public WiFi compliance” after it identified that 80% of the venues it tested had no content filtering (no age checks, no splash pages, no logging) to protect children from adult content – a key part of the UK government’s new Online Safety Act (2023).

A two-year-long campaign by residents and councillors in the Rochdale town of Heywood has succeeded in getting broadband provider IX Wireless (UK ISP 6Gi / Opus Broadband) to remove their 15-metre tall metal mast / pole on Snowden Street. The council said the structure had an “unsightly appearance” and that there had been “little or no consultation with local communities” before its deployment.

The development of the next gen Wi-Fi 8 (802.11bn – Ultra High Reliability) standard – led by Task group IEEE802.11bn – is said to be making “steady progress” and, according to Qualcomm Technologies, a high-level of consensus has now been achieved on a significant portion of the future standard that will focus more on improving network reliability than speed.

Network testing firm Opensignal has published a new study that examines the “striking gap” between the home broadband speeds users are promised by ISPs and the speeds they actually experience – “the biggest factor behind this disconnect is the in-home Wi-Fi environment“.

Rural UK broadband operator Voneus, which continues to deploy a gigabit-capable fixed wireless access (FWA) and full fibre (FTTP) networks across poorly served rural areas, has announced that they’ve deployed their wireless network across the small Carmarthenshire (Wales) town of St. Clears.

Now a team of Italian researchers have figured out how to identify individual people by the biometric identifier they give off when walking through Wi-Fi signals.

The UK telecoms regulator has today launched a new ‘Call for Input‘ to help it decide on the future of the 2GHz radio spectrum band (1980-2010MHz and 2170-2200MHz), which could potentially open it up to wider use for providing broadband connectivity to aircraft and drones, direct-to-device services (4G/5G mobile), and or IoT etc.

Ofcom has introduced changes to its existing licence for the 3.9GHz (3925 – 4009MHz) radio spectrum band, which among other things will adjust the authorised frequency from 3925-4009MHz to 3800-3884MHz (i.e. making it more efficient) and allow Three UK (VodafoneThree) to harness it for fixed wireless and 5G based mobile broadband services (Three Home Broadband).

Mobile operator O2 (Virgin Media) and UK tech charity Jangala have worked with the Newcastle City Council (NCC) to connect more than 1,000 local residents living in housing plus schemes at 30 different locations to a “free internet” service, which harnesses their special GetBoxes (a type of portable WiFi broadband router that uses mobile data).

The UK telecoms regulator, Ofcom, has today set out the final regulations for their plan to auction off a large chunk of millimetre wave (mmW) radio spectrum frequency in the 26GHz and 40GHz bands, which will come into force on 30th June 2025. The spectrum will be used by mobile network operators to deliver faster 5G data (broadband) services.
