The nbn™ Fixed Wireless network in Australia has just set what appears to be a new “world record” after it reached a broadband speed of “close” to 1Gbps (1000Mbps) via 5G mobile technology in a millimetre-wave (mmWave) band, using about 400MHz of spectrum bandwidth, over a distance of 7.3km.

Broadband ISP Virgin Media UK has today launched a new service called Intelligent Wi-Fi Plus, which combines improvements to the firmware of their HUB 3.0 and 4.0 routers with Plume‘s smart home Mesh WiFi system in order to deliver improved wireless connectivity around your home. Some customers will get this “at no extra cost“.

A number of router manufacturers are looking to launch devices based off the new WiFi 6E standard this year, which adds support for the new 6GHz band to the 802.11ax standard. One of the first out of the gate is NETGEAR’s Nighthawk RAXE500 AXE11000 kit, which promises theoretical wireless speeds of 10.8Gbps and WPA3 security.

Mobile operator O2 (Telefonica UK) has informed ISPreview.co.uk that, after a long wait, they intend to join the other primary operators by adding the ability to send and receive text (SMS) messages via Wi-Fi Calling, which they’re aiming to introduce “later this year.”

A new report from the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) has identified a “litany” of failures in the Government’s (DCMS) £5bn Gigabit Broadband Programme (F20), which it warns will result in “business and homes in rural areas” being “locked out of gigabit broadband for years to come.”

It’s been a long.. time coming, but Vodafone has now confirmed to ISPreview.co.uk that they’ve finally started to add the ability to send and receive text (SMS) messages via Wi-Fi Calling, which is important news for those who no longer have the option of using a femtocell based Sure Signal (3G) router. Just O2 left to go.

New documents from the UK telecoms regulator, Ofcom, have revealed that three existing and new internet providers – Exponential-e, Connexin and Fibre Me – all appear to be planning to build their own gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband networks in the near future.

A new project between the Angus Council, SmartRural and UK ISP Rapier Systems in Scotland looks set to help bring “high speed broadband” connectivity to some of the county’s remotest rural residences and businesses via a new gigabit-capable Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) network.

The DCMS Select Committee of cross-party MPs has today published the results of their inquiry into the Government’s £5bn pledge to ensure that 85%+ of the UK can access a “gigabit-capable” broadband service by 2025 and the role of 5G mobile. Unsurprisingly, they found significant concerns with deliverability.

The General Manager of UK ISP Andrews & Arnold (AAISP), Alex Bloor, appears to have launched his own personal YouTube channel and one of the first videos to go up is an interesting one that shows how he solved his own broadband problems by installing a Microwave (wireless) link to the local data centre.

The Adur & Worthing Councils have just handed UK business ISP MLL Telecom a 5-year contract to provide them with a managed network service, which will make use of a new Dark Fibre network to support public WiFi, CCTV, Community Safety CCTV for Sussex Police, as well as LPWAN and IoT sensors.

UK ISP Wessex Internet has today kicked off their side of the 5G RuralDorset (5GRD) project, which will use a mix of 5G technology and their existing fibre optic infrastructure to help bring data connectivity to remote rural farms. All of this will support the use of new sensors, drones and other so-called Internet of Things (IoT) solutions.

Broadband ISP Quickline (part of Bigblu) has today won a fourth state aid supported UK rural broadband delivery contract, which is worth £14.5m and will see them extend their “fibre-backed fixed wireless” network to bring “superfast, ultrafast and in some cases gigabit speed broadband” to a further 15,830 premises in North Yorkshire.

A new world record has been achieved after a collaboration between TIM, Ericsson, Casa Systems and Qualcomm resulted in the companies, for the first time, reaching a broadband speed of 1Gbps over a distance of 6.5km from a radio antenna. This was done using 5G tech in the millimetre-wave (mmWave) band on a live network.
