Internet provider Voneus has just completed their first trial deployment of a new Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) broadband technology in a rural Hartlepool village – Dalton Piercy (County Durham, England), which they claim can offer gigabit broadband speeds to local homes and businesses.

Researchers working out of Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) in Pennsylvania (USA) have demonstrated a new way of using Machine Learning / AI and a deep neural network to map the position of human bodies, including through walls, by analysing the phase and amplitude of WiFi (wireless network) signals.

The Connecting Devon and Somerset (CDS) programme in England and UK ISP Airband have today issued a new January 2023 update on their Phase 2 contract to deploy a gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network across the region, which reveals some of the next areas to benefit.

Back in 2018 we reported (here) on how community ISP HebNet CIC had worked with Scottish Sea Farms (SSF) to extend a 30Mbps+ capable Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) broadband network to serve homes near to two Salmon farms on the Isle of Skye and Knoydart in rural Scotland (Highlands). The good news is that this network is being extended.

Broadband ISP Quickline, which is currently rolling out a mix of Full Fibre (FTTP) and Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) based networks across parts of Lincolnshire, Lancashire and Yorkshire in England, has responded to this week’s price hikes (up to 14.4%) at the biggest providers (here) by reaffirming its own two-year price freeze.

New research from Point Topic has revealed that world fixed broadband lines grew by 1.87% (24.59 million) in Q3 2022 to end the quarter on a total of 1.34 billion connections. But the subscriber growth rate of “full fibre” (FTTP/B) networks in the UK appears to have slowed in recent quarters.

The Cheshire East Council in England has announced that UK ISP Airband has so far covered 3,000 extra premises with their Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network, which forms part of a £4.5m state aid supported contract that was signed back in January 2021 (here) under the Digital Cheshire programme.

The UK telecoms regulator, Ofcom, has today issued an update on its position with respect to whether the upper 6GHz radio spectrum band (6425 to 7125MHz) should be released for use by either higher-power licensed 5G mobile networks (mobile broadband) or lower-power Wi-Fi (e.g. home WiFi).

Blackburn-based network operator IX Wireless, which is building a new fixed wireless broadband network for UK ISP 6G Internet (not related to 6G mobile technology), has been hit with a small fine in the Greater Manchester market town of Bury (specifically the suburb of Brandlesholme) after they built unauthorised digital infrastructure.

The South Western Railway and telecoms firm Evo-rail (FirstGroup) recently announced the people travelling on a 70km long stretch of their Main Line into London – between Basingstoke and Earlsfield – would be the first to benefit from the rollout of new rail-side 5G poles (masts) that will be used to deliver “superfast” onboard WiFi.
