Vodafone UK is First Broadband ISP to Launch WiFi 6E Router UPDATE

Mobile operator and ISP Vodafone UK has today enhanced their existing range of home fixed line (FTTC / FTTP) services by launching a new “Pro Broadband II” package, which claims to be “providing UK’s fastest WiFi signal throughout the home” by being the first provider to bundle a Wi-Fi 6E capable “UltraHub” router.

A number of ISPs have already launched broadband routers that support the recent 802.11ax (Wi-Fi 6) standard, but these can still only harness the common 2.4GHz and 5GHz radio bands. By comparison, Wi-Fi 6E is somewhat more cutting edge and has been designed to fully harness the 6GHz band too, which means more capacity and thus faster network speeds for those sitting closest to their router.

NOTE: Vodafone sells broadband packages via Openreach and Cityfibre’s respective FTTC and FTTP networks in the UK.

Customers who opt for one of their new Pro Broadband II packages, which start at £34 per month (available speeds from 36Mbps to 910Mbps), will also receive Vodafone’s complementary “Super WiFi” booster device (they’ve updated this to support 6E too). Apparently, both bits of kit will allow more than 150 devices to connect simultaneously, if so desired.

As usual, this means that the ISP is also guaranteeing WiFi coverage throughout the home, or customers can leave their contract for free. The small print on their website clarifies that up to 3 WiFi Boosters can be provided at no additional cost if you do not receive WiFi signal and “throughput speeds of at least 10Mbps in each room of your home“.

On top of all that, the package also includes a 4G backup router, which will seamlessly switch to their mobile broadband network in the event of an internet outage (sadly they didn’t upgrade this kit to work with 5G, yet). Finally, the package also includes support from their team of “WiFi Xperts” (i.e. proactively monitor and fix WiFi issues) and 12 months’ free Norton 360 Premium Anti-virus protection for up to 10 devices.

Max Taylor, Chief Commercial Officer at Vodafone UK, said:

“Vodafone Pro II sets the new standard for the UK broadband market. It combines the UK’s fastest and most reliable WiFi technology in the all new Vodafone Ultra Hub router with the UK’s largest full fibre footprint.”

At this point it’s worth reminding readers that existing Vodafone Mobile customers can also shave £3 per month off the price of the operator’s fixed broadband packages by taking this as part of a Vodafone Together bundle. New broadband customers are currently also being offered a “Free Amazon Fire HD 8 Tablet 32GB” when they sign-up.

Sadly, Vodafone has not included a full spec sheet for their new UltraHub router, but we are currently trying to secure one and will update again when that arrives.

UPDATE 6th Oct 2022

Vodafone has confirmed a few of the router’s other features, which is probably about as close to a spec sheet as we’re going to get.

  • Security – WPA2 + WPA3
  • Voice – 2 x FXS voice port
  • USB – 1 x USB 3.1 Type A and 1 x USB 3.1 Type C
  • LAN Ports – 1 x 2.5G Ethernet LAN/WAN and 2 x 1G Ethernet
  • WiFi – Tri-Band Wi-Fi 6E (2.4 + 5 + 6 GHz bands) and 4×4 (11ax) + 4×4 (11ax) + 4×4 (11ax)

The Virgin Hub 5 is pretty sexy IMO.

Shame it’s only WiFi 6 but the speeds are pretty good to be fair, I dumped my ASUS RT-AX88U router over it as it was actually equivalent in speed if not better in some rooms of my flat.

      Thanks for the share.

It sounds impressive. It would have been useful if they had actually shared the speeds attained by their new Ultrahub on non 6E devices (e.g. on Wifi 6 devices [AX] and Wifi 5 [AC]) on a like for like basis versus the other counterparts.

No doubt at short range, the 6Ghz band would have higher speeds than on another band. They haven’t also factored in performance versus another Triband system with a dedicated backhaul.

Or performance against a Quadband system with a 6E band like the Netgear RBKE system.

It’s definitely impressive and great start for “large” ISP to offer this Ultrahub. But at the same time, the tests could actually show comparisons as outlined above.

I could have sworn City Fibre do a 6e router?
Also the hub looks like a smaller version of VM’s Hub 4?

CityFibre don’t do routers – they’re not an ISP.

Can’t wait to read more about this one. I have only just brought myself into the WiFi 6 world and at the moment only have one 6E device anyway (Samsung tablet) but i’d still like to see how these perform since they’ll probably be on eBay in 18-24 months when contracts run out, then it will be time to pick some up cheap!

Can only order the current router on a new order, says you have to call them or chat online to order it.
Will this be opened up to online orders at some point soon without having to speak to them, my current isp contract has finished do I might switch to Vodafone and get the new router.

I hope they release a Wi-Fi 6E router on pro 1 plans because the Vodafone Wi-Fi Hub is quite frankly rubbish. This is way I buy my own Wi-Fi 6 routers because all ISPs make cheap and tacky routers. Look I am very happy and grateful ISPs give out routers if your new to technology and just want to get connected. But some of the more Advanced users would appreciate quality and security. That’s my opinion this a free world everyone is allowed opinion. But with said you can make the Vodafone Wi-Fi Hub a little secure for example very long and complex password for admin login page use a secure DNS and last but not least turn off Universal Plug and Play UPnP. I forgot to mention watch what you download some Advanced users on here will know all this.

It’s also got an SFP cage (Watch the setup video) which is very interesting.

What is that and what benefit do we get

  10. Avatar photo R says:

Launching 22 October according to below documentation. I feel they will charge more than they currently do for this router, if that’s the case better of buying your own router

I wondered the same thing. Whilst the marketing sounds catchy, it is effectively a dual band router with an additional 6Ghz band where the latter can only be harnessed by compatible devices.

They haven’t also factored in performance versus Wifi 6 Triband Mesh systems with a dedicated backhaul. E.g. the Asus XT8, Asus XT12, Netgear RBK7 or RBK8 series, BT Whole Home Wifi 6, etc etc. Or performance against a Quadband system with a 6E band like the Netgear RBKE system (which still has a dedicated backhaul band).

It’s definitely impressive and great start for “large” ISP to offer this Ultrahub. But at the same time, the tests could actually show comparisons as outlined above.

I wonder if they’ll release an updated router for the other packages, hopefully offering at least the more basic wifi 6.

As a user of the new Vodafone ultra hub 11 triyband router I’m completely unimpressed underwhelmed trying to add products on the 2.4GMz band I have to find where 5GMz drops out on my phone witch is outside in my garden I dought a ring doorbell 4 that wouldn’t connect tried and tried over and over in the end I found a way round the problem had some power strips that constantly dropped out had to find a way of keeping them on line I found Vodafone teach team work from a script and didn’t resolve any problems I had the other thing I dislike is having to turn the hub into pairing mode to add device’s BUT with adding one thing to the system I have found a work round to all this with no help what so ever from Vodafone very poor teach team
