A new investment by the North West Leicestershire District Council (NWLDC) means that residents and visitors in Coalville and Ashby-de-la-Zouch can now access a free public WiFi (wireless internet) hotspot service around the centres of both towns.

The troubled Connecting Devon and Somerset project has opened a public consultation on their recent Open Market Review (OMR), which examined the current and future level of “superfast broadband” (30Mbps+) coverage in the two counties and set out a proposed intervention area, ahead of seeking suppliers for a new contract.

Ofcom has today opened a new consultation on the funding (compensation) arrangements for BT and KCOM’s forthcoming Universal Service Obligation (USO), which is due to begin on the 20th March 2020 and aims to ensure that everybody can request a minimum broadband speed of “at least” 10Mbps (1Mbps upload).

Fibre provider Grain Connect, supported by wireless ISP Solway Communications, confirms that it has successfully raised £10m in additional equity finance from Albion Capital (Albion Real Assets Fund). The money will support the further development of its UK “full fibre” broadband network at new build home developments.

The UK telecoms regulator has today confirmed that they will proceed to auction of the 700MHz and 3.6-3.8GHz radio spectrum bands in spring 2020 to boost new 5G networks to potentially Gigabit-capable (1000Mbps+) mobile broadband speeds. But in light of last week’s Shared Rural Network deal (here), the coverage obligation is gone.

Vodafone UK has become the first UK operator to confirm that they will help Transport for London (TfL) to pilot a new 4G (mobile broadband and voice) network through tunnels and at station platforms on the London Underground (tube trains), which will start with the eastern half of the Jubilee line from March 2020.

Mobile operator Three UK, specifically their Three Wholesale division, has today announced their first pilot of a Low Power Wide Area Network (LPWAN / LPWA), which is intended to form the foundation for an eventual nationwide roll-out in order to help connect Internet of Things (IoT) devices (e.g. remote sensors, smart devices etc.).

The Welsh Government has confirmed £4 million to support the Digital Signal Processing (DSP) Centre of Excellence at Bangor University, which among other things will look at ways to harness existing fibre optic technology in the 5G network to “improve capacity, flexibility, functionality and services.”

The Independent Networks Co-operative Association last night announced the winners of their 2019 awards event (The INCAs), which aims to recognise and celebrate the best alternative broadband network ISPs (altnets) from across the United Kingdom. Wins were scooped by Fastershire, Hyperoptic, Stirling Council and others.

Fixed Wireless Access ISP Lothian Broadband, which covers remote rural parts of East Lothian and Mid Lothian in Scotland, has announced that their fledgling roll-out of an ultrafast Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network in the East Lothian village of Gifford is being extended to reach many more homes and businesses.

Good news for residents in the tiny rural Monmouthshire (Wales) village of Llanddewi Rhydderch. Broadway Partners (UK ISP Broadway Broadband) has informed ISPreview.co.uk that all homes within their local pilot network coverage should now be able to take a true 1Gbps capable ultrafast broadband connection.

UK ISP BT has today introduced new ‘Wi-Fi Controls’ for their latest Smart Hub 2 broadband router, which essentially gives customers a greater ability to manage the internet access of their family or network members (e.g. pausing internet access and setting timed access for up to 15 specific network devices / users etc.).

The Government’s £1.7bn Building Digital UK scheme, which since 2012/13 has helped to extend “superfast broadband” (24Mbps+) networks to nearly 5.2 million extra UK premises, has published its latest quarterly customer take-up data to the end of June 2019. Some rollouts are now seeing almost 70% adoption!

The recent cancellation of UK ISP Gigaclear’s “full fibre” (FTTP) rollout contract under the Connecting Devon and Somerset project (here) has left many rural areas with concerns. As a result the Devon County Council has now moved to assure them that the roll-out of “superfast broadband” (24Mbps+) is continuing.

Last week we reported that alternative network ISP Internetty was preparing to deploy a new Gigabit-capable (1Gbps+) Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband and fixed wireless network to serve UK “rural and semi-urbanised areas.” We now have some details of their rollout plan for Lincolnshire and Staffordshire.
