The Pembrokeshire County Council’s (PCC) wider Digital Connectivity Programme (DCP) in Wales appears to have identified the next set of six rural communities (Phase 4 or 5) for their programme, which are likely to benefit from the rollout of gigabit-capable full fibre broadband ISP networks.

Customers of BT’s UK broadband service, specifically those with the provider’s latest Smart Hub 2 (SH2) router, have been told to expect a firmware update over the next 4-5 weeks that should fix a bug with the device’s WiFi (wireless) networking, which has caused connectivity problems on the 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands.

A little-known ISP called Fibairo has become one of the precious few UK providers to launch a rural wireless broadband network using White Space (TVWS) technology, which is being used to help connect remote rural homes and businesses in Castle Douglas and other parts of the Ken Dee Valley in Scotland. The latest research from Point Topic has found that world fixed broadband subscribers grew by 1.6% (18.59 million) in Q4 2020, which is down slightly from 2.07% in the previous quarter but still pushes the overall total to 1.18 billion. Meanwhile, the UK reported the strongest quarterly “full fibre” (FTTP) growth of any country on 28.6%.

Broadband ISP Quickline (Quickfire), which specialises in deploying “full fibre” FTTP and Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) broadband networks around Lincolnshire and Yorkshire, has set a target of covering 500,000 premises with their network after Northleaf Capital Partners acquired a majority stake in the company.

ISP Talk Straight has teamed up with ADTRAN to deploy a new 60GHz based gigabit fixed wireless broadband network across rural parts of the UK. The decision follows a recent Proof of Concept (PoC) trial, which found that the MetNet 60G solution could be a quick and cost-effective way of extending coverage beyond full fibre.
