The North Yorkshire County Council (NYCC) in England has announced that they’ve teamed up with other local authorities in order to extend the reach of their “free public” Wi-Fi (wireless) internet access network across Ripon, Harrogate and Knaresborough. A total of 16 market towns in the county could eventually receive the service.

Mobile operator and ISP Vodafone has today enhanced their existing range of home fixed line “Pro Broadband” (FTTC / FTTP) packages by integrating Amazon’s Alexa AI personal voice assistant into their bundled “Super Wi-Fi Plus” (mesh network) booster device, which has also been upgraded to support Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax).

Mobile operator Three UK, supported by research from CCS Insight, has today called on the Government not to overlook the benefits of “5G WiFi” in their plan to rollout gigabit-capable broadband across the country. Apparently, 5G based Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) could do it “faster and for half the cost of fixed lines.”

A new Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) ISP called WeLink Communications UK has recently begun inviting homes and businesses in the city of Edinburgh (Scotland) to pre-register for their new “Wireless Fibre” service, which claims it will be the first such provider to offer symmetric speeds of up to 1Gbps in Britain.

Ofcom UK has today set out their future spectrum management strategy for the next ten years, which among other things aims to boost support for localised spectrum access (e.g. creating local wireless networks via 5G etc.) and promote greater sharing of existing spectrum in higher frequencies.

UK ISP Quickline, which specialises in deploying full fibre FTTP and Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) broadband networks around Lincolnshire and Yorkshire, has today announced the acquisition of a majority stake in rival wireless provider Boundless Networks to help fuel their rollout of gigabit-capable connectivity to rural areas.

Ofcom’s investigation into BT’s compliance with their obligations under the new Universal Service Obligation (USO) for broadband has concluded that “some customers have been asked to pay materially higher amounts than they should have been.” As a result, they’ve asked the ISP to make a few improvements.

Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) broadband ISP Zoom Internet, which covers a number of areas in West Sussex (e.g. Bognor Regis), appears to be planning to build their own gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network. The plan will focus on poorly served rural areas, where speeds are sub-10Mbps and no other upgrade plan exists.

A new Censuswide survey of 2,014 UK adults that have broadband, which was commissioned by ISP Zen Internet, has found that 75% of people are unaware that using Microwave Ovens could be “causing havoc” for their home WiFi signal and 8% wrongly believe “hitting their router” will improve connectivity.

The Connecting Devon and Somerset (CDS) programme has today issued its response to the UK Government’s consultation on upgrading broadband for “Very Hard to Reach Premiuses” (VHTRP), which calls for larger Gigabit Broadband Vouchers to support rural builds and warns against moving away from “future proof” fibre solutions.

The Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, and Transport for London (TfL) have today confirmed that, following a recent trial on the Jubilee Line (here), they intend to proceed with their proposed plan to deploy a 4G based mobile (mobile broadband) network across the entire London Underground (platforms and tube trains) by late 2024.

Mobile operator Vodafone UK has quietly dropped support for Virgin Media’s (VMO2) Wi-Fi network on the London Underground, which means that customers who want to get online with this wireless broadband service will now have to pay for a pass instead of connecting for free (1 day = £3, 1 Week = £5 or 1 Month = £15).
