The troubled Connecting Devon and Somerset (CDS) project has signed two extension contracts with UK ISP Airband and telecoms giant BT (Openreach), which will see a further 8,200 premises gaining access to faster “fibre broadband” (mostly full fibre FTTP) connections by the end of 2021.

Homes and businesses both in and around the rural village of Scourie, on the north west coast of Scotland, look set to benefit from faster wireless broadband ISP connectivity, which came after a local Salmon Farm (Loch Duart) awarded the area £14,400 from its community fund to help cover the installation.

Consumers in the UK who own one of AVM’s popular FRITZ!Box broadband routers or a FRITZ!Repeater (WiFi) may like to know that they’ve released a major new firmware update – FRITZ!OS 7.20. The new software adds lots of improvements, such as support for WPA3 encryption, better WiFi, DNS over TLS and faster performance.

The European Commission has revealed the winners from their final call-up for vouchers under the €120m WiFi4EU initiative, which includes just 2 municipalities in the United Kingdom that should now receive vouchers worth up to €15K (£13.42K) to help them install FREE public WiFi broadband hotspots by the end of 2020.

Telecommunications network services provider KN Circet, which is part of the Circet Group and operates across the UK and Ireland (clients include Openreach, Vodafone, Virgin Media, BT, Zayo and many others), has acquired ARCC Communications as part of its strategy to expand into UK wireless activities and infrastructure.

The Pembrokeshire (Sir Benfro) council in South West Wales has today announced that Broadway Partners (UK ISP Broadway Broadband) have been chosen to build two new pilot networks in rural parts of the county, which will aim to deliver “gigabit-capable” broadband speeds to local premises. More pilots are expected to follow.

Broadband ISP Virgin Media and Cisco have joined forces to setup the first European commercial deployment of OpenRoaming technology for residents on the Canary Wharf estate, which makes it easier for mobile users to stay connected to the internet by allowing them to seamlessly and securely roam between different WiFi hotspots.

Mobile operator Vodafone’s recent decision to stop selling their femtocell based Sure Signal 3G router on 30th April 2020, while instead encouraging use of Wi-Fi Calling, has one significant flaw. The latter still doesn’t support the ability to send and receive text (SMS) messages (it’s been listed as coming “soon” since 2018).

Mobile operator and UK ISP EE has today reintroduced converged pricing on their fixed line ADSL, FTTC and G.fast based home broadband plans, which in simple terms means that the operator’s existing Pay Monthly mobile customers will pay less than somebody who just orders their fixed line service by itself.

Fixed wireless broadband UK ISP Secure Web Services, which currently offers a “superfast broadband” network at speeds of up to 30Mbps (5Mbps upload) across some rural parts of Shropshire, Herefordshire and Powys, has stated that they’re planning to upgrade their network to offer “gigabit broadband” (1Gbps+) for homes.

The UK Department for Education and ISP BT have today announced that they will provide in-need families with six months’ of free access to the their network of WiFi access points, which extends to 5.5 million hotspots across the country. It’s not quite the free broadband that some have been clamouring for (here), but it’s welcome.

The Scottish Government‘s Minister for Connectivity, Paul Wheelhouse, has confirmed that their new voucher scheme for poorly served areas (i.e. those that cannot access “superfast broadband” 30Mbps+) is set to go live this summer. The scheme will be accompanied by a new online “premises level” eligibility checker.

Opensignal, which specialises in crowd-sourced testing of 4G and 5G based mobile networks, has updated their study of the COVID-19 (Coronavirus) crisis to show how much of an impact it had on Smartphone users across the UK and the world. Suffice to say that mobile users spent a lot more time on WiFi via home broadband.

After several years of development Facebook’s networking division is finally getting the commercial UK launch of their new Terragraph wireless broadband technology off the ground. This uses a mesh of small cell style 60GHz (mmW) base stations to distribute a gigabit speed broadband ISP connection across communities.

O2 has signed a new partnership deal with London North Eastern Railway (LNER), which aims to boost 4G and 5G based network coverage along a 45-mile stretch of the East Coast route – between Newcastle in North East England and Edinburgh in Scotland. The upgrade will also improve coverage for communities along the route.

After a four year campaign for better internet connectivity two villages in rural Somerset (England) – Wanstrow and Batcombe – will soon be able to receive a 30-50Mbps capable “superfast broadband” speed, which is all thanks to a new Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) network from UK ISP Voneus.

Poole-based UK ISP Juice Broadband, which offers a mix of “full fibre” (FTTP) and fixed wireless internet access services to local premises around southern Dorset (England), has teamed-up with local firm Datacenta to agree a new network peering arrangement that will help to keep data traffic between their customers within the county.
