Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) UK ISP Wildanet, which is currently building a new broadband network in rural parts of South West England, has begun offering businesses in Cornwall “guaranteed superfast broadband, with no payments in the first three months and a free standard installation” to help with the impact from COVID-19.

After the fact. Ofcom has today set out the final funding regulations for their legally-binding Universal Service Obligation (USO), which went live in March (summary) – supplied by BT and KCOM – and aims to ensure that people in disadvantaged areas can request a minimum broadband speed of “at least” 10Mbps (1Mbps upload).

The European Commission’s €120m WiFi4EU initiative, which provides vouchers worth up to €15K (£13.42K) to help municipalities install FREE public WiFi wireless broadband hotspots, has announced that it will open up for a fourth and final call for applications between 3rd and 4th of June 2020.

Fixed wireless and fibre optic broadband ISP Voneus has appointed industry veteran Mike Quinn to lead the development of their new gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) roll-out across parts of the United Kingdom, which is being fuelled by last year’s injection (here) of up to £30m from Macquarie Capital.

The Government’s £1.8bn Building Digital UK scheme has now helped to extend “superfast broadband” (24Mbps+) ISP networks to 5,230,474 extra premises since 2012 (up by 32,038 over the past 6 months) – about 370,000 of these are FTTP – and the latest take-up data to Dec 2019 shows rising demand, averaging 62% (Phase 1).

Mobile operator O2 (Telefonica UK) is today in the news for a second time this week after they issued a “letter before claim” (legal challenge) against Ofcom’s forthcoming auction of the 5G (ultrafast mobile broadband) friendly 700MHz and 3.6-3.8GHz radio spectrum bands, which demands more harmonisation of the spectrum.

A new study from Assembly Research, which was commissioned via the vested interests of Huawei, has forecast that the UK Government’s deployment of “gigabit-capable broadband” could provide £51.4bn gross value added to the economy in five years, growing to £68.8bn in 2030. But any delays could be very costly.

The Independent Networks Co-operative Association (INCA) has today said that “delivery of ultrafast broadband to all parts of the UK must continue” despite the current COVID-19 lockdown conditions, which have put significant strain on complex supply chains and exasperated the shortage of skilled telecoms engineers.

Sources indicate that broadband ISP Virgin Media UK are imminently due to start expanding the availability of their latest HUB 4.0 (ARRIS TG3492LG-VMB) router outside of the new 1Gbps network areas, which we understand will be marketed as a WiFi improvement. But there are other reasons for the move.

BT has partly resolved an issue that left many of their InLink UK smart WiFi broadband kiosks without a working tablet or free phone calling functionality (feedback from ISPreview.co.uk readers suggests this has been going on for over a week). The units have also been rebranded to “Street Hubs.“

UK ISP Voneus has announced that their “superfast broadband” (speeds of 30-50Mbps) capable Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) network has been extended to cover premises both in and around two rural Gloucestershire “villages” of Sharpness and Newton, which is a big improvement on the c.5Mbps that some were previously restricted to.

Vodafone UK will today join some of the other major ISPs (e.g. BT) by increasing the minimum contract term of their “superfast” FTTC broadband and phone packages from 18 to 24 months. At the same time they’ll also discount the Superfast 1 (35Mbps) package to be priced the same as Superfast 2 (63Mbps) from £20.95 a month.
