The state aid supported Superfast South Yorkshire project has today announced the signing of a new £10m+ contract with Openreach (BT). This will aim to roll-out a 1Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP network to cover an additional 9,000 premises by Spring 2021.

The Directors of Doncaster-based budget ISP Origin Broadband, which last week hit the headlines due to staff redundancies (here), are now in the process of trying to reach a Company Voluntary Arrangement (CVA) with its creditors. Documents seen by ISPreview reveal that Origin has around £5m in “total unsecured creditors“.

The North Yorkshire County Council has pledged to launch an investigation into any cases where people struggle to achieve “superfast broadband” (24Mbps+) speeds, which is focused upon areas that have been upgraded by Openreach (BT) as part of the state aid supported Superfast North Yorkshire project.

The incumbent ISP for Hull (East Riding of Yorkshire), KCOM, has moved to address consumer concerns by refreshing their fibre optic (FTTP/C) “Lightstream” broadband packages to offer more unlimited data options (as opposed to old fashioned capped allowances), cheaper prices and a new 900Mbps tier.

Over the past couple of weeks a number of sources have contacted ISPreview.co.uk to alleged that Doncaster-based budget ISP Origin Broadband may be in the process of conducting a new redundancy consultation, which it’s claimed could result in the further loss of around 20 to 30 jobs.

The B4RN (Broadband for the Rural North) project, which is deploying a community built and funded 1Gbps “full fibre” (FTTH) rural broadband network to homes in several counties, have taken the hopefully temporary decision not to process new EIS1 forms (Enterprise Investment Scheme) for investments made into the ISP.

Utility infrastructure provider GTC (Brookfield Utilities UK / OFNL) has announced that a sixth ISP – BreezTel – is joining their platform and will thus be able to offer services over their Gigabit capable Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH/P) network, which is being deployed to some new build home developments.

The dominant ISP for Hull in East Yorkshire, KCOM, has announced the introduction of their new “PRO Team” service, which claims to be the “first of its kind in the UK” and involves sending out a special engineering team to help solve customers’ Wi-Fi woes, router problems and buffering issues for free.

UK ISP Signa Technologies (Moorsweb) informs ISPreview.co.uk that their fixed wireless broadband network has been extended to cover more rural homes on the remote North Yorkshire Moors. Customers can expect download speeds of up to 30Mbps (10Mbps upload) and there are plans for a 100Mbps service.

They’ve done it. Fibre optic network builder Cityfibre has announced that their backers have agreed to establish a £2.5bn fund, which will help the operator extend their 1Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH/P) broadband ISP network to cover 5 million premises in 37 UK cities and towns by 2025.

Sporadic reports are coming in this morning from customers of the Doncaster-based ISP Origin Broadband, which appears to be giving some of their subscribers just 30 days’ notice to change ISP before they are disconnected due to a “network restructure outside of our control.”

Cambridge, Leeds and Southend-on-Sea have today been named as the next 3 UK cities and towns to be covered via Cityfibre and Vodafone’s joint deployment of a new Gigabit capable Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH) broadband ISP network by the end of 2021. The rollout is being supported by an investment of £171m.

The Superfast North Yorkshire project in England has revealed how an additional £11.15m of funding, which was recently secured from the Government’s £75m Rural Broadband Infrastructure Scheme (RBIS), could boost “superfast broadband” (24Mbps+) coverage from the current target of 95% to 97%.
